Thor: Love and Thunder is MCU’s next movie and after the surprisingly short run time of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we’re getting an even shorter movie. Doctor Strange 2 was 2 hours and 6 minutes long, and that’s what people complained about. The movie moved forward at an extremely fast pace so the scenes that needed a breather felt kinda rushed. And now, we might face a similar problem again as we’ve got the official Thor: Love and Thunder run time.
AMC and Cineworld theatre chains have listed the runtime of Love and Thunder at 1 hour 59 minutes. Now over time, we’ve seen quite a few instances of shorter superhero movies underperforming at the Box Office. Justice League for instance clearly needed to be longer, and it turned out to be a big bomb with its reshot story. And as I just talked about Doctor Strange 2, it will also fall short of its presumed $1 billion theatrical run. It has managed to make $930 million so far and doesn’t really have the legs to get $70 million more. There was one major crowd-pulling scene in the movie and even that was leaked way before the movie came out.
So similarly, Love and Thunder could also face a similar problem. It will start off with Thor and the Guardians. Then as Thor loses weight and answers Korg’s call, he’ll reunite with Valkyrie and Jane Foster. Team Thor will then travel to Olympus and meet with Zeus. Lady Sif will also show up along the way. Then there’s the whole schtick with Gorr. So you see, the movie has a lot of characters to juggle, and with the given runtime, it seems to be another fast-paced outing.
A shorter runtime doesn’t mean that the movie is bad. But all long MCU movies (except Eternals) have managed to be huge successes because they’ve given the audiences a lot more than they imagined. And MCU’s average runtime which is around 2 hours and 15 minutes seems more sufficient as it allows certain scenes the breathing room they need. But hey, this is Taika Waititi we’re talking about and he knows best! So, let’s put our trust in him.
