Kevin Feige Explains Why The Powers of Ms. Marvel Have Been Altered

Ms. Marvel is just about to make her MCU debut and by now, we’ve all noticed what has happened to her powers. The powers of Ms. Marvel have clearly been altered and there are many reasons why that had to be done. Marvel needed to make this bold decision because Ms. Marvel is a TV show, and not giving her those trademark Embiggening abilities would help with the budget more than anything. But there are other reasons too and Kevin Feige has explained a few of them.

Why The Powers of Ms. Marvel Have Been Altered

While speaking with Empire, Kevin Feige said:

“We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. [Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match.

What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU. You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”

He went on to further explain how the power change is to set up Kamala Khan’s story in The Marvels as well:

“It taps into the future of her story as it connects to her other friends that she will meet in the upcoming film The Marvels. She’s interested in knowing, ‘Great, does that mean I’m an Asgardian? Did I get hit with gamma rays?’ No, it’s seemingly none of those things. It goes to her own past and her heritage and lineage.”

Powers of Ms. Marvel

Well, besides the budget reasonings and The Marvels set up, Feige and co probably needed to distance Ms. Marvel from the Inhumans. She is an Inhuman, but there are no Inhumans on MCU’s Earth-616 for now at least. Her being different indicates that Inhumans aren’t a thing here even though we saw Blackbolt on Earth-838. Also, giving Kamala Khan these Green Lantern-like powers allow Marvel to take advantage of a hero like Green Lantern (since WB isn’t doing anything with him). And, the altered powers of Ms. Marvel make her different from Reed Richards as well.

So, Marvel was absolutely right in their decision to make the change. Do you guys agree? Let us know in the comments.
