Fantastic Beasts 3 Reviews Are In And It’s Quite A Mixed Reaction

Finally, fans have another chance to visit the world of magic and wizards and some of the most fantastic creatures. The latest entry to the Fantastic Beasts movie is here and it has been getting some interesting reviews from people across the world. This Harry Potter spin-off franchise hasn’t really received the acclaim that the original franchise managed to receive. With the failure of the previous entry, there was even speculation that the franchise will stop but the narrative was something quite interesting and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Let’s take a look at some of the Fantastic Beasts 3 reviews and what it means for the movie:

Fantastic Beasts 3

There has been a lot of talk about the latest entry to the Fantastic Beasts franchise because of some interesting developments. One of the major developments has to be the fact that the role of Grindlewald has now been given to Mads Mikkelsen. The actor is known for giving us some major projects over the years and even though losing Johnny Depp is regrettable there is some excitement about what Mikkelsen brings to the performance. Another major development this time around is the fact that the movie will feature a lot more of Hogwarts thus giving us a chance to get closer to the Harry Potter franchise.

Reviews For The Secrets of Dumbledore

Apparently, the movie is very informative, but its reviews are all mixed. Early RT scores show how this film might end up in the Rotten category as far as the critics are concerned.

According to Siddhant Adlakha from IGN,

The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series; there are two more entries planned, but ending the Harry Potter spinoff here would be a mercy. There’s nothing fantastic about the new movie. The story is dull. The characters are duller. It’s visually unimaginative, and there are few actual secrets of which to speak (one reveal from the last entry is mildly clarified, but that’s about it).

Drew Taylor from The Playlist feels that the franchise has finally made an interesting entry:

It can be said, with some certainty, that ‘Fantastic Beasts’ has finally found its footing. This latest entry is the most fun and most buoyant in the relatively young series. And it’s enough to make you actually look forward to a subsequent installment (should there be one) instead of actively dreading it. “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” pulled off the most impressive magic trick of all: making you care about this franchise.

THR’s Lovia Gyarkye addressed the controversies behind the franchise involving the cast:

If Secrets of Dumbledore has a reason for existing, it’s perhaps as evidence of coping with disenchantment. It’s difficult to remain enamored by the Wizarding World when its production is mired in controversy and its creator frequently espouses dangerously myopic views. This inevitably influences perceptions of the work, revealing, at least to this critic, just how obsessed these films are with binaries — good and evil, poor and rich, love and hate, light and dark. But life, like storytelling, is far more complicated, and that’s a lesson the franchise would be wise to embrace.

Fantastic Beasts 3 reviews

According to Laughing Place’s Alex Reif, the franchise is taken in the right direction with this movie:

My first impression is that The Secrets of Dumbledore course-corrects the series in many ways and also rights a few of the wrongs that made me feel underwhelmed by The Crimes of Grindelwald. Chief among them, Newt Scamander feels like the central character again. Sure, the narrative spends enough time away from him to feel a little unfocused, mostly following the titular wizard and his nemesis/heart’s desire, but overall, this one feels like it’s Newt’s movie again. The other joyous element of this Fantastic Beasts entry is that the beasts are back. In the last installment, Newt’s occupation as a magizoologist felt barely part of the series.

Screen Rant’s Rachel LaBonte wonders if the five-film franchise has managed to achieve anything major for this to be the mid-point of the five-film franchise,

This movie is meant to be the midpoint in a five-film franchise. However, by the time the credits roll, one might be hard pressed to decide if anything major has actually been achieved. There is a sense that, save for perhaps one major development, Dumbledore and the other heroes end right where they began in Fantastic Beasts 3. The stakes are both high and low. Much of the action in this movie hinges on a wizarding election, something that, for being as important as it evidently is, could have used way more explanation. Instead, the early portion of The Secrets of Dumbledore is focused on the initial steps Newt and the others must take in their grand plan against Grindelwald. They are fun to witness, but with the bigger picture fractured because of Dumbledore’s determination to hide everything from Grindelwald, they can seem pointless in the long run. At its core, though, the biggest issue facing Fantastic Beastsremains its characters. Law is still an excellent young Dumbledore, and he comes across as the most fully-formed person; that’s not surprising considering how Dumbledore came from Harry Potter.

It seems that even with all these views, the movie might just be worth watching. There have been changes in the franchise as it has shifted the original protagonist and given him a back seat while Dumbledore has now become an essential figure along with Credence. Fans were in awe of the beautiful world that the first entry in the franchise managed to create with the variety of creatures that showed up. It would be interesting to see how these creatures continue to show up along with the complex arc of Credence and the relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be released in theatres worldwide on April 15.
