Apparently Drax Can Lift The Mjolnir. But There’s a Catch!!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has its share of “strong/silent” types. We have all shades of badasses in the cinematic universe. Starting with the OG badass Black Widow in Iron Man 2, we have had a constant influx of them in the MCU. The most interesting part of it all is that MCU’s rendition of the characters has rubbed off on the source material and now even the comics are signing to their beat. Still, the comics are a universe of their own where fascinating things happen all the time. Like did you know that Drax can lift The Mjolnir, but only under a very specific condition? I am not joking, this actually happened in one of the comic storylines. Don’t believe me? Keep reading to find out the truth for yourself.

Our story takes place in Guardians of the Galaxy #20 by Brian Michael Bendis and Ed McGuinness. Drax and Star-Lord find themselves stranded in an alternate universe. Only, they also have Thanos and Nova with them and they are also in the possession of the Cosmic Cube. Unfortunately for them, this universe is known as the Cancerverse. This is because the people of this universe are all morally devoid and corrupt. Their evil ways have plagued this reality and it is now a living cancer of sorts. Even the Avengers of this universe are not safe from this cancer. This is evidenced by the fact that they are the ones who attack the Earth-616 characters when they end up in this universe.

Drax Can Lift The Mjolnir

The Earth-616 characters are in possession of the cosmic cube which is one of the most powerful artifacts in the MCU. When the evil Avengers attack the team, they are met in combat by The Mad Titan who shows them why he was given that name. Thanos makes short work of the evil Avengers and asserts his dominance in the field of battle. At the end of the preliminary conflict, he takes possession of the cosmic cube and tells the Earth-616 heroes that he will leave them here in the Cancerverse as they had previously plotted to do with him.

Sadly, the heroes cannot oppose him in earnest because Nova was injured when the Avengers attacked and Star-Lord is desperately trying to stop his bleeding at the time. At this moment, Drax does something that only Drax can do. He takes a step forward and charges the Mad Titan with all his might. But we have seen this match up a thousand times before and we know how it ends. Drax, alone, is simply not powerful enough to defeat Thanos. This is why, I suppose, the writers thought that it would be a good idea to have Drax lift the Mjolnir.

Drax picked up the Cancerverse’s Thor’s hammer in this storyline and went on to pound Thanos into the next issue. It was an iconic comic moment when the destroyer wielded the power of the God of Thunder and destroyed Thanos with it. But there is a catch. Thor’s hammer can be wielded only by those who are worthy of its power. This usually amounts to people who are willing to sacrifice themselves in order for others to survive. But this is not the 616 universe.

The Explanation

The heroes are in the Cancerverse and here the same rules don’t apply as in the 616 Universe. This means the same rules don’t apply. It is also possible that Mjolnir does not have the same enchantment as it does in our universe. I mean, this Tho is not exactly a very good person. Moreover, it is possible that at the moment that Drax attacked Thanos to protect his comrades without knowing if he would win or not, he met the requirements and became worthy of wielding the Mjolnir. We cannot know which is the truth unless he tries to lift the Earth-616 version of the weapon.

We were surprised to see that Drax can lift The Mjolnir in the comics, but we are more surprised by the fact that the writers did not explain the moment in much detail. It is possible that this plot point may have more repercussions in the future.
