Why Nagini May Not Return in Fantastic Beasts 3

Since the second trailer dropped for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’, fans are extremely excited. The trailer did an excellent job of creating a lot of buzz and making people talk. Not only has it led to many new fan theories floating around but has also led to fans asking many questions. While the third installment promises a huge cast and some epic action, an important character from the second film might not return. We believe that it’s Nagini the snake! Here’s why Nagini may not return!

One of the exciting reveals in ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’ was the appearance of Nagini. In the Harry Potter series, we meet Nagini as Voldemort’s trusted companion and one of his horcruxes. However, the second installment of the Fantastic Beasts series gave us more insight into this unique character. The film introduced us to the human form of Nagini, played by Claudia Kim. Now we know that Nagini was not an ordinary snake, but a maledictus. A maledictus is a person who carries a blood curse that eventually traps them in the body of an animal or beast permanently. This curse is mostly carried by women in the wizarding world, which means Nagini got it from her mother.

So, now we know that Nagini was a woman before she got trapped in a snake’s body. In the film, Nagini is still in her human form but can transform into a snake at will. She also befriends Credence and helps him on his quest to find his real family. However, by the end of the film, Credence joins Grindelwald and leaves her behind.

Why Nagini May Not Return in ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’?

According to the two film trailers, we know that ‘Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ will focus majorly on the mysterious past of Albus Dumbledore. In the Harry Potter books, we got a brief insight into Dumbledore’s history that suggested that he had a very dark past. Thanks to the Fantastic Beasts series, we are finally getting Dumbledore’s backstory that includes his complex relationship with Gellert Grindelwald and his brother Aberforth. The film will also shed light on his relationship with Credence Barebone, which could be the key to defeating Grindelwald. The politics of the wizarding world and major historical events like the World War 2 will also be at the backdrop as the series is taking place in different cities around the world.

Now the question is, whether the character of Nagini will make an appearance in the third instalment of Fantastic Beasts? Looking at the official posters and other promotional tools for ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’, we can say that her chances of appearing in this film are slim. And if the character does appear in the film, she will have an even smaller role than the previous film. Moreover, we feel that the franchise will use her character in a way that she will appear only when she has the opportunity to add something relevant to the plot.

Is Nagini’s Story Over?

Why Nagini May Not Return

So, does this mean that Nagini’s story is over and will not be explored further in this series? Not really. Seeing how this character was introduced in the last film, we believe her story is far from over. Since she piqued the interest of the fans and played a pivotal part in the second film, she might return to the last two films. Also, there are still many questions left unanswered about this intriguing character. ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’ showed her as a circus performer, which gives a perspective into her life before she became Voldemort’s loyal companion. Some theories on the internet even suggest that Nagini’s appearance in this series could mean that we might also get introduced to a young Tom Riddle. Since Tom was a parselmouth, he could have befriended Nagini at a young age, when she was permanently transformed into a snake.

Therefore, there is still a lot of potential for this character that starts as a benevolent young woman and goes on to become Lord Voldemort’s most beloved Horcrux. And with two more films left in this franchise, we can expect to see her story unfold in the future.
