The Original Story of Kenobi Revealed (It Was Rewritten Because of The Mandalorian)
We are finally going to get our chance to witness the story of Kenobi being explored in a solo venture. There had been long discussions of a project like this with Ewan McGregor reprising the role but it seemed like that wasn’t gonna work out. With the success of the first live-action series in the Disney+ platform, we now have the series finally set to come out later this year. There has been a lot of hype for the series and now we have gotten some insight regarding the project. According to reports, major changes have been made to the original story of Kenobi because of its similarities with The Mandalorian.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Fans have been wanting a series around the character of Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi for a long time now. This was primarily because the character is actually one of the major redeeming factors in the Star War Prequels. Lucasfilm decided to make a narrative with an anthology of movies but these plans were dropped following the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story at the box office. With the success of The Mandalorian, the narrative was reworked into a series and we will finally get a chance to see it come to life soon. But there was some complication surrounding the series that has now made it into the news.
Similarities With The Mandalorian
It is quite clear that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series had to undergo a lot of hurdles to finally make it through. Apparently one of the biggest issues with the series was its similarities with the series that started it all, The Mandalorian. The story of the Mandalorian and Grogu is something that draws some of the most awesome parallels from the masterpiece manga Lone Wolf and Cub from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. It saw the titular character go on an adventure in order to protect Grogu while coming across some assassins and others who are after them.
According to a report from THR, Ray Park’s Darth Maul was set to appear in the series as one of the villains. This would have seen Obi-Wan protecting young Luke Skywalker from Maul and other similar bad guys. They were all after the future Jedi and thus there is a clear parallel to The Mandalorian. Director Deborah Chow, who had directed some of the episodes from The Mandalorian, consulted series creator Jon Favreau and Dave FIloni. The duo would later raise concerns regarding this parallel and these concerns would reach the essential ears. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy would end up re-evaluating the series based on the concerns.
Original Story of Kenobi
According to Joby Harold who is the new writer for the series, following the replacement of Hossein Amini:
This was a character that’s always been a minor obsession of mine. And when I heard it was a character they were exploring, I very aggressively told them all the things I thought they should do.
When we last saw Obi-Wan in the prequels, he’s very emotional. There’s a passion to him. And when we get to see him again in A New Hope, he is the Zen master. That was the story that I wanted to understand — what had happened to Obi-Wan between the guy that Ewan had brought to life and the guy that Sir Alec Guinness brought to life.
Initially, there were no clear plans of bringing back the character of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. This would increase the hype for the series a lot more with a chance to see Obi-Wan and Anakin reunite. According to the writers, the series will take place 10 years after the Obi-Wan went into hiding in Tatooine, placing it somewhere between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Considering picking on the narrative from Revenge of the Sith could be quite challenging we can only expect to see an exciting rendition of the project come to life.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on the Disney+ streaming platform on 25 May.
