The Origin and Powers of Ms Marvel Explained

Ms. Marvel will be the second big series based on the MCU set to come out this year. The series will introduce us to another major Marvel character who will be making quite an interesting debut in the franchise. Along the six-episode series will get to meet the character of Kamala Khan as she navigates through her life and suddenly gets in control of some rather interesting superpowers. There was a lot of excitement for the series as fans wanted to see how the character would be adapted for the live-action interpretations. Certain elements about the character have been changed for a suitable live-action depiction. Let’s take a look at the changed origin and the powers of Ms Marvel.

Ms. Marvel

The character was first introduced in 2013 as Marvel’s first Muslim-American superhero. This will end up making waves for becoming one of the biggest moves in the comics universe as Kamala Khan’s cultural significance cannot be overstated. Two years later in 2015, we will get to see street artists in San Francisco use Kamala Khan as a symbol of opposition to the anti-Islamic American Freedom Defense Initiative. That’s not all as later we would also get to hear Barack Obaram name-drop Ms. Marvel when he would meet her co-creator Sana Amanat. This just goes to show the power the character has outside of being a Marvel superhero.

Ever since it was announced that we would be getting to see a live-action depiction of the character, there was some worry amongst the fans. This was mostly because of the visuals of her powers in the comic. When the series was first announced, Marvel writer G. Willow Wilson, who introduce the character to the world, stated:

I think there’re some characters who are very much set up for the big screen; they’re very naturally sort of cinematic. But with Ms. Marvel, we really weren’t interested in creating something that had very obvious film potential. I was really leaning — and I know Adrian [Alphona] and Takeshi [Miyazawa] and all of the artists as well — were really leaning into the comic book-ness of this character. She’s got very comic-booky powers. God bless them trying to bring that to live action.

Ms. Marvel Origin & Powers In Comics

Powers of Ms Marvel

According to the comics, Ms. Marvel is associated with the cosmic being known as the Inhumans. These were actually a certain group of humans who were experimented upon by aliens. Fans might remember that there is a group of Inhumans who had left the human race to live in secrecy in the isolated city known as Attilan. At puberty, the Inhumans are exposed to a mutagenic substance that is known as the Terrigen Mist. Following the events of Infinity, a cloud of Terrigen was spread across the planet’s atmosphere when Attilan was destroyed. Thus, anyone with the Inhuman gene exposed to the Terrigen cloud ended up developing superpowers.

This is how a random Muslim-American kid living in New Jersey ends up becoming Ms. Marvel. There have been certain changes in the powers of the character over the years. But basically, she has the power to control her own molecules. Thus, she can stretch various parts of herself, much like Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four. This is only a bit of what she’s actually capable of. Ms. Marvel can shrink and grow at will and thus shapeshift to change her appearance. When the character first appeared, she was focused on making herself look like her hero Captain Marvel.

Ms. Marvel MCU Changes

Based on the trailer for Ms. Marvel, we can be sure that there will be a lot of interesting changes to her character in the series. The character will still be the ordinary teenager who stumbles upon being a superhero but the powers will come in a unique manner. We saw that she stumbles across some alien bracelet and that will end up being the key to her powers in the series. There is actually a homage to the Terrigen Mists as we saw in the trailer a flare of cosmic energy surrounds Kamala Khan when she puts on the bracelet. But considering there is no Inhuman legacy it would be safe to say that this aspect won’t be covered in the series.

Fans have connected this bracelet to the Kree artifact known as Nega-Band that was first worn by Captain Marvel in the comics. But the bands also seem to have a rather interesting resemblance to the Quantum Bands that are associated with the superhero Quasar. The band clearly allows her to manipulate energy as she can be seen being able to create force fields of some kind. It is quite obvious that the amount of change to her character in the series will be unlike any other character in the Marvel universe.

Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ on June 8.
