Tom Holland Becomes The Box Office King With Uncharted and No Way Home
The Marvel Cinematic Universe projects are known to rule with their box office success and each new addition tends to break new records. It wasn’t surprising that the MCU projects managed to bring people back to the cinema halls following the pandemic. Each of the Marvel releases saw some rather high numbers at the box office and proved their worth to the people. Spider-Man: No Way Home managed to break records and still continues to do so and it is not surprising that it managed to do so. Another Sony project, Uncharted has proven to be a massive success and this was also headed by Spider-Man star Tom Holland. The success of both Uncharted and No Way Home have managed to make Tom Holland the king of the box office.
No Way Home
There was a lot of excitement regarding this entry to the Spider-Man franchise. It brought together three generations of Spider-Men together and thus managed to bring fans from all these generations to savor the movie. The success of the movie doesn’t come as a big surprise due to these reasons and it further proves the success of the MCU as a franchise. No Way Home has managed to beat Avatar as the 3rd highest-grossing movie in domestic history. It didn’t take long for this movie to do so as the movie earned the top spot following two weeks of its release.
Uncharted
Even though Tom Holland was leading this video game adaptation, there wasn’t much high expectation for this movie. But the movie opened to $44 million and managed to topple every single release during the week. There was a lot of fandom for the games and it was expected that the movie will see a fair success with this audience. Last year we got to see Free Guy which was also a movie surrounding a game and it did well at the box office. But it seems that Uncharted has managed to do well in an otherwise slow box office month following No Way Home‘s success.
Uncharted isn’t stopping with its success as the movie has now managed to secure an additional $23.2 million at the box office. According to Variety, this has managed to make sure that the movie is again at #1 this week. But this title doesn’t come as a big surprise considering there wasn’t much competition this week. The only other major title was the poorly received thriller The Desperate Hour starring Naomi Watts.
Meanwhile, No Way Home continues to perform well and has now slowed down a bit but is still headed for its $800 million mark in the domestic box office as it currently stands at $779 mil. As for the worldwide numbers, No Way Home has made a whopping $1.863 billion, which is way beyond the initial projections. A Chinese release would have guaranteed a victory over the likes of Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens! But anyway, what the film has done is just commendable!
Sony Chief Tom Rothman Talks About Uncharted
Following the success of Uncharted, Tom Rothman pointed this out and also talked about how this movie managed to prove the naysayers wrong. He stated:
With over $100M in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company. This marks a great victory for every single division of the company, as the film was our first major production entirely shut down by the advent of Covid, yet we persevered to complete a picture the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic verve worldwide, despite the pandemic.
Tom Holland seems to be at the top of the world with a long streak of success in the box office. The actor has managed to lead the box office race for eight weekends out of the last 11 ever since No Way Home was released in theaters. This proves that the actor has made a name for himself and is an essential start to lead some of the essential franchises. It will be interesting to see when the actor will go this magic again in the theaters. He will be seen returning to Apple TV with the upcoming series The Crowded Room. Uncharted is now playing in theaters worldwide.
