Why Doctor Strange Does Not Seem Like Himself in Multiverse of Madness

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become synonymous with complex storylines and fresh ideas. The showrunners have been innovating and responding to fan needs for the past decade and a half. Sometimes these adaptations and innovations are so pre-emptive that fans get confused about what is going on. Something similar seems to be happening with Multiverse of Madness and No Way Home. Fans have been wondering why Doctor Strange does not seem like himself in the footage of these movies. We have a theory as to why this is. So keep reading to find out the true reason behind his weird behavior.

So many fans have been speculating that the Doctor Strange we have seen in No Way Home and in the Multiverse of Madness trailer is not our Strange. Ergo this is a variant who has taken Strange’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this is the reason why he seems off to the everyday viewer. However, this theory is very boring. It is the low-hanging fruit that the fans are reaching out for when there is a more obvious and less surreal explanation out there. Also, making this Strange a variant will discount the events of No Way Home, so we don’t think Marvel will go that route. But then what is the reason for this behavior?

Doctor Strange Does Not Seem Like Himself

Reddit user u/TheMediocreCritic posted this theory on r/Fantheories. Take a look:

“Just to be safe expect spoilers for all Marvel films, tv, and trailers in the comments

TL;DR: Dr. strange seems different or “off” in Spider-man: No Way Home because he is dealing with post-Blip depression. He was snapped for five years, and when he came back, the job he had was no longer available, and the love of his life was engaged to someone else. He feels like the snap stole his future from him.”

The user has highlighted something that most of the fans missed during their speculation. We have all been blaming Strange’s reckless attitude for surreal and external reasons. The fandom desperately wants to believe that their former sorcerer supreme is the ideal human being who is always rational and doesn’t let cosmic dissonance affect his mental fortitude. While this is true for the most part, we must remember that Strange is as human as the rest of us. He may know how to perform incredible magic but that does not make him completely immune to the struggles of everyday life.

Doctor Strange does not seem like himself

The Sorcerer was one of the people to be blipped when Thanos snapped his fingers. He was also the one to come up with a plan that would save humanity. But that doesn’t change the fact that he is still human. The sorcerer must be just as shocked as the rest of us coming back to a post-blip world. He not only lost his job as the Sorcerer Supreme but the trailer of Doctor Strange 2 shows that Christine is also marrying someone else. So it would be obvious for Strange to get depressed at this point because of all the things that are going on in his life.

The Consequences

Losing your job and your love in a short period can mess up anyone. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Doctor Strange does not seem like himself in the recent movies. The sorcerer is depressed and he needs love and care to feel better. This won’t come from saving the world over and over again. It will only come through self-reflection and maybe some therapy. Being a medical professional Strange knows the importance of mental care, but we must remember that he is an egoistic individual. While that ego has been toned down over the years, it still forms part of his basic nature.

Doctor Strange does not seem like himself

It is not uncommon for people like this to refuse help and try to do everything themselves. If you know someone like this then we suggest that you reach out to them and ask them to seek the help that they need. All we have is each other. We are supposed to support ourselves.
