Matt Reeves Reveals Why He Declined To Direct Affleck’s Great Batman Script
We are going to get a whole new version of Batman with the upcoming Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This would be another addition to the various adaptations we have had for the character in the last few years. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding this project because the movies have always had their own unique renditions of the character. This version won’t be a part of the DC Extended Universe that will bring a whole new spin on the character. But fans are still wondering how the solo Batman film from the DCEU would have worked out. Matt Reeves gave some insight into the original plans that Ben Affleck had for Batman with the solo venture script.
Ben Affleck’s Solo Batman Film
The DCEU didn’t seem to do much success initially with their projects. The fans of the franchise only got hooked on it because some of the moments from the movies were actually quite honest to the DC Comics. Most of the important characters got their solo ventures and some were under development. The very first time we got a chance to look at the Batman for DCEU was in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. There was a divided response to the character but this has been something that we have gotten to see with almost every interpretation for the character.
There were plans for a solo Batman film for the DCEU that was actually going to be directed by Ben Affleck. Warner Bros. had planned for a solo Batman film for quite a long time and we would have seen Affleck write the script for the film too. There were major teases regarding the movie following the reveal that it would have seen Deathstroke as the villain. Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke was going to be the film’s main villain and we even got a video revealing his take on the role. But Ben Affleck dropped out from directing the project in early 2017. The actor then retired from the role of Batman and his final appearance would then be the Justice League reshoots. We will actually see the actor reprise the role one last time in The Flash.
Matt Reeves Reveals Details About Ben Affleck’s Script For Batman
Matt Reeves, director of The Batman revealed the plans Warner Bros. had for the Batman and the script that Ben Affleck was working on. In the interview with Esquire he said:
I read a script that they had that was a totally valid take on the movie. It was very action-driven. It was very deeply connected to the DCEU, with other major characters from other movies and other comics popping up. I just knew that when I read it this particular script was not the way I’d want to do it, I said ‘look, I think maybe I’m not the person for this’. And I explained to them why I love this character. I told them that there have been so many great movies, but if I were to do this, I’d have to make it personal, so that I understood what I was going to do with it, so that I know where to put the camera, so that I know what to tell the actors, so that I know what the story should be. This take, I told them, pointing at the script, is a totally valid and exciting take. It is almost James Bond-ian, but it wasn’t something that I quite related to.
Other Details About Ben Affleck’s Batman Project
Ever since Ben Affleck’s Batman film was canceled various details regarding the project have now been revealed. It was revealed that the movie would actually be inspired by the popular Arkham Asylum games that are actually considered the absolute favorite. Joe Manganiello also revealed that his character Deathstroke was gonna kill a popular Batman character. Other plans for the movie included that it would be an introduction to Batgirl, but we will get to see a solo venture for the character now. We will actually get to see Batman make an appearance in the Batgirl film but it would be Michael Keaton’s version.
Matt Reeves did not agree with the version that Ben Affleck planned and he had his own plans. These plans are actually exciting because we will get to see a completely different take on the character. The trailers for the movie have indicated that it will be grounded and gritty. But fans would have loved to see a Batman film that will be a bit more like the James Bond movies. There have been a lot of influences that the two franchises have shared over the years and it would make for an exciting project.
