Jeremy Renner Reveals the Funny First Meeting of Chris Hemsworth and RDJ

Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. have become household names ever since their debut with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They are also a part of the very original group of actors who were a part of Phase 1 of the MCU. Chris Hemsworth continues to play his role as Thor whereas Robert Downey Jr. had an ending to his character following the events of Avengers: Endgame. It is very hard to even imagine that it has already been 10 years since we had seen their characters Iron Man and Thor team up together for the first Avengers film. Jeremy Renner recently revealed a hilarious story from the sets of The Avengers which came to life during the first meeting of Chris Hemsworth and RDJ.

The Avengers

Fans of the Marvel world of comics got to see some of their favorite characters come to life with the MCU. Each project, in the beginning, set up the individual narratives that would go ahead and play out a larger narrative. The characters were given to a large variety of actors who brought their own interpretations to the screen. All of them coming together for a single project was an absolutely awesome chance for the fans. We got to witness them bringing together each and every one of their elements and portray them in a larger manner so as to fit the narrative of the project. While the movie took time for the characters to get along, it seems that the six founding actors actually liked each other immediately.

Some of the most awesome moments in the 2012 movie included the hilarious encounters that the heroes had upon meeting each other. Iron Man and Thor actually had a rather remarkable moment which saw Thor taking Loki away from them when Iron Man was able to capture him. This scene leads to a faceoff between Thor and Iron Man as the two had not met each other before. When Iron Man first gets to see Thor he comments on Thor’s attire by saying, “Doth mother know you weareth her drapes?” which is an actual Shakespeare quote. While the onscreen moments led to some fun scenes, behind-the-scenes the two actors also had a rather fun moment.

According to Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, during his appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Downey and Hemsworth had a fun first-time interaction. He said:

If you ever played any sports, it was like joining a new team. I knew Robert Downey Jr., I knew Scarlett Johansson, I just didn’t know Chris Hemsworth. He’s amazing, but we didn’t know, right? On the first day, we’re all waiting around in our costumes. It looks like it’s Halloween. We’re excited but equally feeling ridiculous. I feel like we all knew each other somehow, someway, except for this Hemsworth guy, because he comes from Australia. And he’s the tallest, the most good-looking… Downey was like, ‘We gotta break his knee. We gotta take him out. This guy’s too good-looking. He’s too tall, he’s too charming, f*ck this guy.’

Fans might be surprised to know that this was not the very first time that the actors had encountered each other. The actors actually gather together for the lineup as the founding members of the MCU during the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. This lineup also included Nick Fury star Samuel L. Jackson and Agent Coulson star Clark Gregg. The event was supposed to be announcing the project that would see them all coming together. It is rather obvious from Robert Downey Jr.’s interaction with Chris Hemsworth didn’t find it difficult to work together. Later we would actually witness them all getting rather close to each other.

As each of the founding members is slowly being replaced with other stars, it becomes fairly obvious that no one can take their place. Their behind-the-screen relationship actually ended up giving us some of the best moments in the MCU. Fans actually enjoy watching their interactions during the various talk-show events and other promotional events too. Fans will always hold The Avengers at a very high place in their MCU moments because of the fun that it allowed us to witness. It will continue to be one of the most special MCU projects.
