How No Way Home Retcons The Death of Nick Fury From CA: TWS
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for setting up certain events that we might get to witness in the future of the MCU. There are a lot of details in the projects that indicate what we might get to witness going ahead. Often events are referenced in a very secretive manner and this actually makes things rather interesting for fans to pay attention to. Nick Fury has been a very essential part of the MCU and it seems he continues to be a significant character with upcoming projects. To the eyes of certain heroes, the character is still alive and secretively working in order to maintain some major events. Spider-Man: No Way Home retcons the Death of Nick Fury. It indicated that the secret about Nick Fury being alive is not a secret anymore.
Nick Fury
Nick Fury’s status in the MCU has been kept a mystery from the ordinary people and this is something we know right from the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The movie actually saw an assassination attempt on the character and then he was declared dead in the presence of both Captain America and Black Widow. Later it is revealed that Fury is actually still alive and under treatment at a secret base. He returned right around the end to take his revenge on Alexander Pierce, who along with other members of Hydra was taking over SHIELD.
While we do get to see him appear for minutes in Endgame and Infinity War, the character is seen in a major role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The character appears along with Agent Maria Hill in order to convince Peter to work with them so that they can prevent the multiversal enemy that Mysterio had lied about. Later in the movie, we revealed that this wasn’t Nick Fury at all and it was instead a Skrull.
Fury’s Mention In No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home actually sees a mention of the character when Peter was being interrogated by the Department of Damage Control. The movie actually picks up right after the events of Far From Home, where we saw Peter’s identity being revealed by Mysterio in a telecast that was done by Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson. The charges levied against him cause the DDC to apprehend him and then interrogate him to answer questions regarding the case against him. During this interrogation, Peter asks Agent Cleary to get a statement from Nick Fury, as the latter could clear him of all the charges. To this Cleary answers, “Nick Fury’s been off-world for a year“, leaving Peter absolutely confused.
This statement clearly confirms that there are people who might know more about Nick Fury than we had been aware of. During the events of Winter Soldier, SHIELD was dissolved and Nick Fury went rogue. There was even a gravestone for him, which we saw being visited by both Steve Rogers and Nick Fury. Fans had assumed that this remained the case up until No Way Home might have changed this entire theory.
There has been a serious issue with the continuity of the MCU in the last few years. This has been more apparent with the MCU Spider-Man films where we saw jumps being made over certain spans of years. Spider-Man: Homecoming itself had seen an 8 years jump which had fans confused about its relative setting in the timeline of MCU. But there is a chance that this might not actually be an error and more of a means of setting up the character for the events of The Marvels and Secret Invasion. Both of these projects are supposed to have Nick Fury to a certain capacity and it would make sense that his presence is hinted at by new projects in theaters now.
