The Marvel Cinematic Universe gave us one of the best years with a lot of content in terms of both shows and movies. There was some worry over the idea of the shows being unable to stand at par with the movies but these worries were easily thrown off. Each of these shows had some trademarks and other details that were quite similar to the signature style of narrative we have seen in the MCU movies. This includes nods to the comics, references to future characters, and last but not least, the cliffhangers. MCU is known for giving us some of the biggest cliffhangers of all time, with the ending of Avengers: Infinity War being one of them. This year we finally got some clarification for the cliffhanger around the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home with the final movie in the trilogy No Way Home. Let’s take a look at some of the most shocking cliffhangers from all 2021 MCU shows.
WandaVision: Alternate Pietro Arrival
Fans were wondering what role Evan Peters might be playing in the Disney+ series WandaVision considering the actor was associated with the project. As the series would go around the character of Wanda Maximoff, a clear reference was that he would be playing Pietro. The actor had actually played the role of Quicksilver in 20th Century Fox X-Men movies. But it was clearly very early for the fans to see a crossover happen. But then episode 5 of WandaVision came out and we saw the actor playing the very role we were expecting him to play. There was as much wonderment about this as Wanda herself was surprised.
What If…?: Zombie Thanos
One of the most exciting episodes on the animated anthology series What If…? has to be the Zombie apocalypse arc. The episode held back at nothing to give us a rather interesting story that would see a massive fan following. Even though the episode did not actually pull a sufficiently long narrative, it did bring us something that we can expect from the series in a live-action narrative. The series takes place right during the time of Avengers: Infinity War and thus it sees a major parallel with the opening sequence. But this actually leads to one of the most exciting endings as we see a zombified Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet going for the snap.
Hawkeye: Kingpin’s Photo
There were a lot of theories floating around regarding the Netflix Daredevil series being canon to the MCU with the stars of the series being associated with some of the projects that came out this year. The Hawkeye series was a very grounded series and fans started wondering who will actually be the main villain of the story as each layer was being opened one by one. A massive hint at Kingpin was given when we got to see Maya Lopez’s arc being explored as the character who appears as her uncle. But all the theories were confirmed when we finally got to see Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in a photo with Kate Bishop’s mother right at the end of episode 5.
Loki: The Loki Variants
Loki was the perfect series for the titular character as each episode had a completely shocking revelation like a twist around the end. The final episode was definitely a massive cliffhanger in itself as we saw Sylvie killing He Who Remains and this would bring Kang the Conqueror as the prime villain. But another interesting shocker came a few episodes before the end when we had thought Loki had died. But instead, we saw Loki ended up going somewhere where he met with some of the other variants of himself like Kid Loki, Alligator Loki, etc.
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier: Ayo and Bucky Confrontation
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier opened up with a major cliffhanger with the news of John Walker being announced as Captain America. This very character would create a rather shocking ending when he would end up murdering someone with the shield in episode 4. The biggest cliffhanger was surely when Bucky and Sam end up breaking out Baron Zemo from the prison and Ayo ends up confronting Bucky. Ayo is a member of the Dora Milaje and she was rather close to the Winter Soldier when he was recovering from the effects of his past.
