Since the first John Wick movie in 2014, the franchise has grossed millions and millions of followers. The franchise has grossed $86 million in its 7-year span. With three movies in production, the franchise is not going to end anytime soon. The movie is even giving rise to spin-offs and prequels. So, we’re going to look at the upcoming John Wick universe projects.
Lionsgate’s CEO, the owner of the franchise, announced in August 2020 that the franchise will have a Chapter 4 and 5 with a prequel and a spin-off. Let’s take a look at what the future holds for us fanatics!
Upcoming John Wick Universe Projects
1. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4
John Wick: Parabellum turned out to be such a huge success that the Studios announced Chapter 4 within 4 days of its release. The film is currently under production. The film will hit theatres on May 27, 2022. Initially, John Wick 4 was supposed to release in May 2021. However, the COVID-19 outbreak caused the movie to be delayed by a year.
Keanu Reeves will be back as the assassin moves forward in his conquest to rise above the High Table. Returning with him will be Laurence Fishburn as the Bowery King, Ian McShane as Winston and Lance Riddick as Charon, the concierge at the Continental. The film will also include some big names like Hiroyuki Sanada, Clancy Brown, Scott Adkins, Bill Skarsgård, Donnie Yen, Marko Zaror, and Shamier Anderson. The antagonist of the film, Akira, will be played by Rina Sawayama. The script’s credits go to Shay Hatten and Michael Finch. You may know Hatten as a co-writer for Chapter 3: Parabellum. Chad Stahelski will be back on the director’s chair.
As for the plot of the movie, the Studios have done a great job at preventing leaks. Although, we know that the sequel will pick up exactly where Chapter 3 left the characters. When Winston betrayed John Wick to keep his hotel, John Wick was taken to the Bowery King who was yearning for revenge against the High Table. So not in MAtrix 4, but we will see Neo and Morbius teaming up once again to overthrow the High Table. The movie will be a full-on action movie with martial arts like never before.
2. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 5
This one was officially confirmed in August 2020. This is a predicament of the belief and trust that the Studios have in Chapter 4. The initial plan was to shoot both the chapters back-to-back as soon as Reeves was available. However, the outbreak changed the plans. With a year of delay for Chapter 4, the creators have not focussed much on Chapter 5 as of yet.
Currently, there are no updates on the movie. The cast, release date, and plot remain a mystery. We don’t even know that who among the prevailing actors will come out alive. Also, since there is no announcement of Chapter 6 as of yet, Chapter 5 might be the finale of this franchise. However, Keanu said that his character will keep up with his violent ways as long as his fans like him to do so. So, there might be a possibility where we could even get a sixth or seventh installment.
3. THE CONTINENTAL (A PREQUEL TV SHOW)
Ever since the first movie, Continental Hotels have always been an interesting topic for fans to talk about. And after the announcement of a TV show dedicated to this chain of hotels, back in 2017, fans went berserk. The show was supposed to premiere by now but the Covid outbreak affected this show too. Hopefully, we will be seeing the first season by this time next year. The series will have 3 feature-length episodes and will be featured on STARZ.
The show will be based in the 70s, with a younger version of Manager Winston in his starting days as a hotelier. The era of the plot was a topic of controversy behind the scene. By the end, the writers decided on the 70s. The casting of the show is still going, however, we have our leading characters. The show will be headed as Colin Woodell as Winston, Ben Robson, Jessica Allain, Mishell Prada, Nhung Kate, Mel Gibson, and Huber Point-Du Jour.
4. BALLERINA (A FEMALE-LED SPIN-OFF)
John Wick: Chapter 3 introduced us to The Director, the leader of the Ruska Roma. From the way she was talking to John, she might be the head of the orphanage where John grew up. So, she might be the mother figure in John’s life. She was seen training a ballerina in very cruel ways. In the following scenes, we figured out that the boys were trained to be assassins using weapons while the girls were trained as assassins by teaching them dancing. Dancing is considered very close to martial arts in many cultures.
Ballerina might be a female upcoming John Wick Universe Projects ersion of Wick where she seeks vengeance against the people who supposedly killed her parents. Ana de Armas, who recently lead-starred in No Time To Die, is rumored to play the she-assassin. The Continental will be based in the 70s, so, a Keanu Reeves cameo was almost impossible. However, if Ballerina is set in a John Wick (2014) time frame, then we could even see a small Ballerina-Wick team-up.
