Chadwick Boseman as Star-Lord Almost Got His Own Animated Series

Marvel’s animated series What If…? surely knew what it was doing with the narratives that we got to explore throughout the series. This was quite a turnout considering these narratives were something the fans of the franchise never expected to explore. The series also gave us a team of heroes that come from the wide variety of stories that exist in the multiverse. This team may play a key role in all the circumstances in the future of the various other threats that might for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series also gave us a chance to look at Chadwick Boseman’s final performance as T’Challa. In fact, it seems there were plans new MCU show for Chadwick Boseman as Star-Lord.

What If…?

With What If…?, fans got an opportunity to see just how wild the MCU could get and it is no wonder why the series was given an animated treatment. The series introduced us to Peggy Carter as a rendition of Captain America known as Captain Carter, a spoilt Thor who was brought up without his sibling Loki and then Black Widow from a universe where almost everyone had died due to the actions of a threat who was bigger than we thought he would be, etc. The series was able to deliver us with a bigger threat in a single episode than the entirety of MCU.

One of the episodes explored the tale where Prince T’Challa is abducted by the Ravagers and ends up being the Star-Lord. Voicing this character was Chadwick Boseman’s final performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character becomes an essential figure throughout the galaxy and might also be known all across the multiverse. The latter is quite clear considering the Watcher brings him in for the team of heroes who are supposed to defeat the version of Ultron who is a threat to the entirety of the Multiverse.

After the finale, it was revealed that there were plans for this T’Challa Star-Lord in another universe. During an interview with the director of the series Bryan Andrews, it was revealed that Marvel Studios had plans for a T’Challa Star-Lord spinoff right after the finale of Season 1. Andrews said,

“Chadwick had recorded his Star Lord T’Challa stuff early. But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed. I think it was maybe just a few months, or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But, um, we got him in time to have everything [for Season 1]. I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him — and also this new version of Star Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”

He admitted that there were serious plans regarding this show with the setting being in the same universe as the story for the first Season of What If…?. Boseman passed before the series could be turned into reality. He added,

“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and that crew and that whole thing. We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”

So far Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter is the only character from the first season who will probably make an appearance in the future seasons of the series. There were major plans for Chadwick Boseman as Star-Lord in the future of the MCU. This goes to show the actor had with this role on the creators and writers of the franchise with his performance. T’Challa won’t be recast going ahead in the future of the MCU and this could mean that his appearance in the future of the series could be based on sufficient material recorded for Season 2.
