Theory: Hank Pym Created Ultron Instead of Tony Stark In What If…? Episode 7
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded to unprecedented depths in the last few years. Ever since Infinity War and Endgame, we are seeing quite a different MCU than before. Many people expected that things will slow down after the Infinity saga ended but Marvel Studios seems to have no intention of slowing down. Every episode ends with a new cliffhanger in What if…? And Episode 7 takes it a step further by presenting an Ultron with all Infinity Stones at the end. This makes us think that Hank Pym created Ultron instead of Tony Stark in What If…? Episode 7.
We say this for a variety of reasons. One of which is the fact that Iron Man is missing from most of the movie, which is rather peculiar. Party Thor created a ruckus throughout the world and it was wide enough to land on Iron Man’s radar. This is considering that when Loki made a scene he was promptly confronted by Iron Man with the background music of Shoot to Thrill. The inaction of Iron man is no coincidence for we believe he is dead in this universe too. But that is a theory for another time.
Regardless, it seems that the iron Avenger is nowhere to be found and this makes this timeline even more interesting. For who could have created Ultron if Iron Man does not exist in this timeline. It has to be the original creator of the AI from the comics aka Hank Pym. This would make a lot of sense since we have seen the genius lose his mind in prior episodes of What If…?
Hank Pym Created Ultron Instead of Tony Stark
I mean he murdered all of the Avengers before they were Avengers so it follows that he has the capability of creating an Ultron who can collect all the infinity stones. The second reason why we credit the creation of Ultron to Hank Pym is that the story of Party Thor takes place relatively early in the timeline of the MCU. This makes it even more unlikely that Tony would have had anything to do with his creation. In the sacred timeline, Tony was able to create Ultron only after careful dissection of mind stone.
Yet at the juncture of Thor’s original visit to the realm, there is no sign of the mind stone on earth. It was, in fact, in the possession of Thanos at the same time in the sacred timeline. This signifies that the version of Ultron that we get cannot have been created by Tony, because the man was not capable of creating it at this point. Moreover, there has been a substantial motive for Hank Pym to try and destroy Shield and the Avengers. He has no love for either and would likely try to create something to combat them.
It is possible that Pym came across the mind stone through some unknown circumstances. This would have made him curious to examine the artifact. Since the AI that Pym would have created would not have been as deadly as Stark’s(because of lack of access to the Iron Legion and Stark’s global defense systems) it would have needed to bide its time. So that is what it did. It waited until it had the opportunity to strike and then claimed Pym’s life and all of his meager assets. It would then continue on to use the Pym particles to steal all the stones.
Rise of the Machines
The Pym Particles would have made Ultron almost undetectable. With the mind stone in his possession, he must have gathered all the others and returned home to finish what he started. I know all of this sounds rather surreal but it certainly makes more sense than Tony leaving the entire world to defend itself and leave everything to Captain Marvel. Not to mention S.H.I.E.L.D. never even tried to contact any other heroes other than her, which is slightly strange, if you ask me.
The lack of Avengers could also signify that may have all perished in a previous battle or none of our heroes exist in this world. I just keep returning to the fact that such a wild party would have attracted a lot more heroes than it did. Captain Marvel was left to battle Thor alone and battle us what she did.
