Shang-Chi Scores A Strong Second Weekend At The Box Office

The entertainment industry has been experiencing a hard time with their releases following the Covid-19 pandemic. This is mostly because most people are still getting over what the world went through since last year. Major studios are still delaying these projects in order to gain the best response from the audience. Marvel initially planned to release their projects in both cinema halls and the Disney Plus streaming platform. But they took a chance with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings by making a release at the cinemas. This proved to be a major success as Shang-Chi scores a strong second weekend too at the box office. It has earned another $35.7 million in its second weekend, already taking in $9.7 million on its second Friday at the cinemas.

Box-Office Success

Shang-Chi scores a strong second weekend

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have been able to gather a strong positive response from both the critics and the fans. And the film has only suffered a 52% drop in its second weekend after bringing in $75 million on its first weekend. This comes as a major surprise since the last such venture by Marvel with Black Widow experienced a box office collapse a few months ago. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings seems to have clearly gathered a position at the top five films at biggest box office films for the week. This includes James Wan’s horror film Malignant at the third-place following Free Guy.

Future Marvel Projects

The current numbers of Shang-Chi stand at $257 Million (Domestic total – $145 million and International total – $112 million). This stellar box office performance seems to make sure that Disney will now release the rest of its projects exclusively in the theaters for the rest of the year. This will follow with the upcoming addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe release of Eternals.

Shang-Chi scores a strong second weekend

Still, the total income of Shang-Chi might be under affected because it has become really tough for the film to secure a release in China (following the resurfacing of Simu Liu’s old video, which has been causing a lot of backlash in China). Let’s see if the film will be allowed to land in the Chinese market in the coming months. It is a really good movie, and it should be seen by all. So, I hope that it does get a green light.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The screenplay was written by him along with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, based on a story by Cretton and Callaham. It stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung.
