Why Maguire and Garfield Did Not Appear in The No Way Home Trailer

Marvel and Sony just released the teaser trailer for the new Spider-Man movie. But despite popular demand, the trailer didn’t reveal Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Men from their universes. The rumors of their appearance have been going around ever since the release of Far From Home in 2019. So why is it that Maguire and Garfield did not appear in the latest trailer?

The return of Tobey and Andrew for this film has been one of the worst-kept secrets for MCU. The third installment of the MCU’s Spider-Man was one of the most anticipated projects by Marvel so far. Additionally, with MCU’s Phase 4 yet to premiere, Spider-Man: No Way Home was going to be the first movie to look into the unventured concept of the Multiverse. Except for the appearance of the older Spider-Men, fans were excited for the regrouping of the Sinister Six in the MCU. And the trailer served it just right. It was a wonder how Marvel managed to put so much in so little.

TRAILER BREAKDOWN!

The trailer revealed Tom Holland’s Peter Parker interacting with Benedict’s Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. With his life turned upside down because of Mysterio’s revelation in the previous film, Peter Parker sought the Mystic Arts for a solution to his problem. It is a great saying, “With complex spells, come complex problems.” A single flaw in Dr. Strange’s spell opened the doorways to various alternate universes.

Maguire and Garfield

This gateway is a potential way for introducing Tobey and Andrew to the MCU. But the trailer didn’t reveal anything about multiple Spider-Men. However, all the other fan theories and rumors have been proved right. Moreover, after the events of Loki, we know that many variants of a single person can exist in various timelines. So MCU could show Maguire’s and Andrew’s Spider-Men as the variants of Holland’s. Marvel developers have tried their best to keep this big reveal a secret. But with so many leaks, even they have stopped to hide this fact. Recently, JB Smoove, who plays the teacher in Midtown High, talked about how he was excited to see Tom alongside Tobey and Andrew.

Besides the characters that weren’t featured, many villains of the infamous Sinister Six were seen in separate shots. The villains started to appear after Dr. Strange’s spell went sideways. We saw Electro’s yellow lightning just like in the comics. Along with him, we saw sand building up identical to the one we saw in 2007’s Spider-Man 3’s Sandman. The Lizard’s hand appeared in a momentary scene, following with Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin’s pumpkin bomb. When this wasn’t good enough for the fans, the ending moments of the trailer revealed a metallic appendage belonging to the leader of the Sinister Six, Doctor Octopus. The trailer ended with Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock saying, “Hello Peter!” This might easily replace the hyped “Hello There” by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Revenge Of The Sith.

WHY IS MARVEL TRYING TO HIDE SOME SCENES?

Maguire and Garfield

If Marvel is known about something, it’s their marketing skills. By revealing the team of the villains across the multiverse, Marvel still kept some information for the future. Although their attempt to keep Tobey and Andrew’s appearance a secret went sideways. Still, Marvel’s decision to hide the Spider-Verse might be something to keep fans waiting. Marvel tends to keep hiding important plots until the very release of the movie and keeps us on the edge of our seats.

The trailer was adequately balanced, just like everything should be. It lays the foundation of the movie and still keeps us second-guessing, just what a good trailer should do. It would be wise if Marvel doesn’t reveal the news officially until the end of the second phase of marketing and just release the information like a bomb.

OTHER ASPECTS OF THE MOVIE

Fans should also focus on the fact that everyone in the main timeline now knows about his real identity. A major part of the opening of the movie will focus on how Peter Parker and his friends cope up in society, especially, Ned, MJ, and Aunt May. Hopefully, Marvel will finally reveal the three Spider-Man swinging through New York in one frame in the second trailer. With Shang-Chi and Eternals on their way, Marvel has planned a feast for its fans and they will not be disappointed.

What did you think of the trailer? Were you able to identify all the villains as they appeared? Are you excited about the return of Maguire and Garfield? Do let us know in the comments.
