The Marvel Cinematic Universe has developed into a beautiful franchise of inter-related movies. The movies have their own kind of trend, we have seen all kinds of comedies and dramas in the MCU. But something unique came out of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. According to the production team, Thor 3 was mostly improvised. Improvisation was a big step up for the MCU as none of the movies before it was produced in such a fashion. The reception by the audience was overwhelmingly positive and Taika Waititi was thus raised to the status of MCU Royalty. Now, there is a report that Taika Waititi is jumping ship over to DC with his directorial prowess.
Giant Freaking Robot has some well-trusted sources that have unearthed some invaluable information. You see, Taika Waititi was recently featured in the DC movie The Suicide Squad as the father of Ratcatcher 2. He played the Ratcatcher, and while the director’s role was minimal in the movie. he certainly seems to have made an impression on the cast and crew. It is now reported that the presence of Taika Waititi on the set has led to him entering in talks with WB studios to direct a DC movie. This is fascinating news as it seems that WB is moving towards an era where they will actually start listening to their filmmakers.
The Secret DC project
It is not yet clear what project will Taika Waititi will be involved in. It is not even clear if Taika Waititi is actually directing a DC project at all because he has his hands full at the moment. After Thor: Love and Thunder, his Star Wars movie will probably arrive in 2025. Apart from that, he has WB’s Akira and What We Do in the Shadows 2 still under development. So, I don’t know where he’s going to fit a DC project as well since he will probably even direct a Thor 5 at some point in time.
Let’s just take this rumor as a grain of salt, but let’s also consider the possibility of it. If he is set to direct a DC movie, we cannot be sure whether it is an existing project or a completely new one. As things stand, Waititi will choose the project he wants to work on, and also write it himself. I’d love it if he helms Man of Steel 2 and does exactly what he did to the Thor franchise, i.e. brings a fresh breath of air into the franchise.
Is It Green Lantern Corps.?
But, it’s likely that MoS 2 will never happen since WB is going for a JJ Abrams-produced Superman movie featuring an actor of color. They are also looking for a person of color to direct. So, Taika is out of the picture for that. Maybe he’d be going for Green Lantern Corps. That would be awesome, don’t you think? This way, he’d get to redeem himself from the horrors of his involvement in the first Green Lantern movie.
Anyway, the director has developed a reputation because of his unorthodox style. He is proficient in the innovative and the new, and he will surely bring this flavor to DC. It is also possible that Waititi was specifically added to the cast because WB and DC may have wanted to scout him. Although, I don’t think that he really needs any more scouting after what he has done with Ragnarok, JoJo Rabbit, and possibly even Love and Thunder.
If this rumor is real, we cannot wait to see what the director comes up with. His wit is infamous in professional circles and his capabilities are limitless. The upcoming films from DC’s slate include The Batman, which arrives on March 4, 2022, Black Adam on July 29, 2022, The Flash on November 4, 2022, Aquaman 2 on December 16, 2022, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods will hit theatres on June 2, 2023. DC also has films like a Superman Reboot, Batgirl, Static Shock, Green Lantern Corps. and Blue Beetle under development. But those films are undated till now. Which of these undated films do you think Taika could direct? Let us know in the comments below and keep watching this space for everything Marvel, DC, and Hollywood.
