Loki episode 1, “Glorious Purpose, disregarded the very existence of Infinity Stones. So, everything you knew about them is rendered completely useless. At the beginning of the episode, it was shown that the Tessaract was given to a desk worker of the TVA named Casey. His desk drawer revealed multiple Infinity Stones that have been collected by the TVA over the years. He even revealed that these Infinity Stones are used as paperweights by the workers. Honestly, I was personally surprised. But why was Loki shocked after seeing the Infinity Stones at the TVA?
Here’s Why Loki Was In Disbelief After Seeing The Infinity Stones At The TVA
The first episode focused on Loki trying to escape the TVA. But after seeing the Infinity Stones casually lying around stunned Loki to a massive extent. Why is that? That’s because Loki’s entire existence for the past few years was all about these ‘paperweights’, as put by Casey, the TVA desk worker. Loki had been trying recklessly for all these years to collect these Stones to prove his loyalty to Thanos. He let the Chitaury army enter New York. And he also led a rebellion against his own brother. At this point in time, Loki is questioning every little decision he made for Thanos’s destiny.
Thanos is the only being that Loki has ever feared. When it comes to others, they’re simply below him. The Mad Titan is the only one who was able to wield all the Infinity Stones perfectly, and moreover, use it twice. I mean, even the Hulk was knocked out unconscious after using the Stones once. Speaking of Loki himself, he is the only other being in the entire MCU to ever wield two Infinity Stones at once. That’s a significant sign of how powerful he is. But seeing the Stones lying around like that obliterated his life’s purpose.
Why Loki Fears The TVA More Than Thanos
The TVA has made it clear that they know about the variant’s past and future both. That’s because they are aware of the timeline. This is exactly when Loki discovers how his life is going to turn out to be. Even before discovering the Infinity Stones, Loki sees that it was Thanos only who kills him. And honestly, Loki was shaken beyond belief after seeing this sight. His loyalty to the Mad Titan came crashing down. It made him question all his wreckless endeavors to please him.
But now, Loki fears the TVA more than Thanos itself. That’s because he knows that Thanos isn’t aware of the fact of how powerful the TVA is. What Thanos calls his destiny, the key to his purpose is lying somewhere casually in a pencil-pusher’s desk. The sight of his efforts reduced to that is what finally deflates Loki to the point of no longer trying to escape. Hence, Loki has now bowed down in obedience to the Time Keeper’s creation.
Loki & His Unfateful Relation With Infinity Stones
The only reason why Loki is ultimately distraught is that the Infinity Stones are tossed into a junk drawer. This is where the God of Mischief’s insecurity takes over. The reason is that secretly, he knows that one of the Stones has bested him. Yes, I’m talking about the Mind Stone. He is powerful enough to use two Infinity Stones simultaneously. But, it’s later revealed that the Mind Stone had influenced him in return. Loki is based on the 2012 version of Loki after the New York battle. So by now, he has been apart from the Mind Stone long enough to have realized it had been influencing him.
So knowing that something so powerful that defeated him is not even considered as a minor threat is killing him. This was a subtle way of the TVA telling Loki that escape is not an option. And that there are things beyond the understanding of his God mind. But the silver lining is here that the Trickster doesn’t just spot one but multiple sets of Infinity Stones. That means that the TVA collected the Infinity Stones from one timeline, but they’ve collected them from multiple timelines again and again.
