The Old Guard Wins Best Superhero Movie Award

With all the commotion we have had in the year 2020 regarding the coronavirus pandemic, most of us legit waited for the award ceremony to happen. The inaugural Critics’ Choice Super Awards was held on January 10, hosted by Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez. The show celebrated series and films across the superhero realm and genre, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, Action, and Animation genres. The award ceremony aired on CW. For those who missed it, the show will be available for streaming for free on The CW App and cwtv.com starting on January 11. And now the question that pops up is, who won the award for the Best Superhero Movie? Well, we have our answer right here.

The answer to the question is – The Old Guard. The movie sits at a cool 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, bringing it into the category of Certified Fresh, for which you need to have more than 75% rating.  The movie revolves around a group of mercenaries, all centuries-old immortals. They also have the ability to heal themselves. But then, someone grows close to their secret, they must fight to protect their freedom.  The Old Guard was one of the five films that were nominated for Best Superhero Movie at the inaugural Critics’ Super Awards.

The other four were Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Superman: Man of Tomorrow. The movie is based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka, The Old Guard. It is written by Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Released on Netflix in the United States on July 10, 2020, the film follows Andy (Charlize Theron), Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), and Nicky (Luca Marinelli) — a group of centuries-old warriors with regenerative healing powers who work as mercenaries in modern times. The Netflix film was met with critical acclaim, currently holding an 80% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Along with this, Ewan McGregor wins the honorary title over fellow nominees Skylar Astin (Secret Society of Second-Born Royals), Jim Carrey (Sonic The Hedgehog), Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Old Guard), and Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog). Ewan McGregor portrayed Black mask/Roman Sionis in 202s Birds of Prey, Birds of Prey, a villain who inspired the lethal starring ladies to team up against him as they seek to protect Cassandra Cain. “I want to kill you, because without the Joker around I can,” the character famously said in the film to Harley Quinn. And this was the moment where she decided to look for help in order to defeat him. The DC Comic character Black Mask first appeared in 1985’s Batman #386 and was created by Doug Moench and Tom Bandrake. Sionis is known in DC’s Gotham City to be one of the most dangerous criminal masterminds and frequently goes up against the Dark Knight.

Directed by Gina Pryce-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Harry Melling. It is currently streaming on Netflix.

Actor Ewan McGregor won the Best Actor in the Critics’ Choice Awards, and Harley Quinn was the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Harley Quinn, which she is set to reprise in James Gunn’s reboot The Suicide Squad, set to release on August 6.
