As the world is on a progressing road, it is becoming easier for people to break the gender norms. They can run around as they are and as what they want to be seen. The boundaries of the binary gender have become more inclusive and divided itself into a wide array of genders- from transgender to the non-binary, and more. When someone is non-binary, they don’t confine themselves strictly to the norms assigned to one particular gender. As some of them put it, they “float somewhere in between”. Gender-fluid people prefer to be addressed as “they” or “them”. Here are 10 celebrities who have proudly identified themselves as non-binary.
Lachlan Watson
Lachlan is an inspiration to many for being one of the youngest non-binary actors in Hollywood. Widely known from the Netflix show “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, Lachlan says “I identify as both non-binary and pansexual, which are two very fancy ways of saying I don’t care.” Lachlan plays a transgender teenager, Theo Putnam, on the popular show. They also prefer the term gender freedom rather than gender-fluid.
Tommy Dorfman
Tommy is a popular Netflix star whose breakthrough role was in “13 Reasons Why” as Ryan Shaver. Tommy has been open about being gay, just like their character on the show. They have also expressed the complexities of modeling with gender-defined clothes as a non-binary person. Tommy says “Physically, biologically I am male, and I’ve never wanted to change that.. yet inside, I am considerably more female. My spirit is more female, this even my therapist could intuit.”
Brigette Lundy-Paine
Brigette instantly won hearts for their role in the understated Netflix show “Atypical”. They opened up about their gender fluidity on Instagram with a message,
“I’m non-binary, always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither. using they/them as of late n it feels right,”
They added,
“scary af to come out n been rly putting this off. But I feel I owe it to myself and to all of us who struggle w gender. If you’re NB comment and celebrate yourself! u r beautiful and u r whole.”
Elliot Page
Elliot Page has been a noteworthy star in cinemas since a very young age. He rose to critical-acclamation after his terrific performance in “Juno” that won Academy Award for writing. Eliot is also known for his work in “The Umbrella Academy”, “Inception”, and the “X-Men” franchise. He came out as non-binary and transgender through an open letter on social media that gathered support from millions of fans across the world.
He wrote,
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life,”
“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
Nico Tortorella
Nico is widely recognized from the series “Younger”. They have been open about their gender fluidity for a very long time and even wrote about it in their book “Space Between”. Nico is married to Bethany C. Meyers, who is also non-binary and prefers “they/them”. They have also been open about having a polyamorous marriage. Nico had once shared a message on Instagram which read
“We are ALL multidimensional dynamic creatures and as much as I understand the spectrum, the less I believe in the binary of gender, the more liberated I myself am becoming”.
Janelle Monae
The music star and recently turned actress from “Moonlight”, Janelle identifies herself as non-binary and pansexual. She even retweeted a gif of a non-binary character from Cartoon Network “Steven Universe” with the caption “are you a boy or girl? I’m an experience”. Monae hasn’t clarified on the pronoun she prefers but has previously used she/her for herself.
Amandla Stenberg
Amandla is a well-known actor whose breakthrough roles came from “The Hunger Games” and “The Hate U Give”. They opened up about being non-binary in 2016 via a Tumbler post and has since actively advocated for more gender inclusivity in movies.
Ruby Rose
The beautiful and fan-favorite star, Ruby Rose, rose to prominence from “Orange Is The New Black” and “Batwoman”. Anyone who knows her has always been aware of her gender-fluid identity. She has been proudly open about it since the beginning and says “I am very gender fluid and feel more like I wake up everyday sort of gender neutral”. Sam Smith
The heartthrob singer Sam Smith is widely admired for his flawless voice and work in “Writing’s On The Wall” and “I’m Not The Only One”. He has always comfortably found himself in the middle of the gender spectrum and prefers they/them. During his conversation with Jameela Jamil about gender identities and more, Sam said “I’m not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between,”
Liv Hewson
Liv got their breakthrough role in “Santa Clarita Diet” alongside Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The Australian actor came out as non-binary at the age of 16 but found it challenging to be open about it initially in their profession.
