Sony’s New Female Led Spider-Man Universe Movie Has Found Its Director

Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters is only getting bigger and better. With Spider-Man, Sony owns around 900 Marvel characters. So, their own little shared universe could also become quite big in itself. With Venom, Morbius & Kraven, Sony is finally planning to bring a female superhero in the lead. It’s most likely going to be none other than Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman.

Female Led Spider-Man Universe Movie Found Its Director

Deadline has reported that Olivia Wilde has just closed a deal with Sony. She is going to direct an upcoming female led movie set in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Earlier this year, Sony had scheduled another Spider-Man Spinoff movie to hit theatres on October 8, 2021. The movie was untitled back then, but it was obvious that either Kraven or Spider-Woman was going to fit in this title. COVID-19 came in and delayed the entire release schedule of Sony. They had to move Morbius & Venom: Let There Be Carnage to 2021 and Spider-Man 3 was pushed to December 2021. The movie that was scheduled for October 8 was replaced with Tom Holland’s Uncharted. But later, the Uncharted movie was preponed to July 16, 2021 release. So, the untitled Spin-off currently stands without a release date and it has obviously been pushed to 2022. Here’s what Olivia Wilde tweeted:

This Spider emoji gives us a confirmation that Wilde’s new project is none other than Spider-Woman. This Spider-Woman movie is the same untitled project that Sony had initially scheduled to release for October 8, 2021. Now, we could expect it to be the Marvel film that Sony will release after Spider-Man 3, and possibly before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 (which arrives on October 7, 2022).

Now that we have the Olivia Wilde confirmation, we will soon be getting an official announcement that she is directing Spider-Woman. This announcement might also bring us other details like who is the writer of the film, the lead actor and when will it arrive. Also, the interesting thing is that both Disney & Sony hold the rights to Spider-Woman. So, it’ll be interesting to see if Spider-Woman will appear in the MCU as well.
