10 Great Netflix Original Action Movies You Should Watch If You Love The Genre
Great Netflix Original Action Movies:
There is no denying the fact that Netflix is keeping all its subscribers happy with their regular top-notch content. There’s a massive library of great content to binge on the streaming service that you almost miss out on some hidden gems. For those who love the action genre the most, Netflix offers a great deal of good-fun & intense action movies that you should watch at least once if you’ve got a Netflix subscription. These action movies range from some hard-core big-budget action films to the ones that involve elements from the sci-fi genre as well. You’d find that some of these films might not have higher ratings on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes, but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy them as fans of the action genre. Here’s a list of 10 action movies on Netflix that we recommend:
Extraction
Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction turned out to be Netflix’s most watched action movie when it hit the streaming service. Even though most of you have watched the film already, I’d say that the intensity of the fighting was that you’d want to sit for a second viewing. Hemsworth totally kills it (quite literally). This film made a strong case for the fact that Tyler Rake is no less than John Wick. In fact, Rake seems even grittier & brutal if you compare him to John Wick. Because it was directed by stunt-man turned director Sam Hargrave, it was so big on action.
Spectral
Here’s a sci-fi action film that’s hidden amongst many other IPs on Netflix. This film offers a concept & visuals that you might not have witnessed in other projects. James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Max Martini deliver strong performances.
Beyond Skyline
Frank Grillo in many ways is Netflix’s go to action movie star. But Beyond Skyline without a doubt is his best film on Netflix. It’s another take on aliens invading Earth. Sure, the “science” in this sci-fi flick is all over the place. But you actually get to witness stunning witness along with some great character motivations. Then there’s the Indonesian actor Iko Uwais who delivers his hardcore Asian martial arts killing mighty aliens in ways you may not have thought of.
The Old Guard
Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard is the latest film that’s kickin’ ass on Netflix. It is right up there with Extraction, among the top 2 Netflix original action films. Theron continues with her ability to deliver some intense action heavy performances that we witnessed in Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde. And she is well supported by her co-cast members Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli and Marwan Kenzari who all play a team of Deadpools (they’re unkillable). Watch this movie if you haven’t already.
6 Underground
The one thing that Netflix really does well is that it hands over all the major creative choices to the guys responsible for making the film. 6 Underground was a Michael Bay movie in every sense of it. People grew a bit tired of Bay’s style of directing and storytelling in the Transformers franchise, but his style is what really worked for 6 Underground on Netflix. Surely, Ryan Reynolds would’ve had a lot of say in the film. But Netflix allowed Michael Bay to fully unleash himself with all the slow-motion shots, fancy cars going “Boom” all around, some mind-bending visuals. We just cannot wait for Bay and Reynolds to team up once more for the sequel.
Triple Frontier
Last year, we got another action movie that was good for one viewing. It packed an ensemble cast which included Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam & Pedro Pascal delivering some great performances in an action-heavy heist film. You should go through this film once if you haven’t because your inner Affleck fan will certainly get emotional through the film.
Bright
To this very day, we’re still eagerly waiting for Bright 2. David Ayer delivered a pretty cool movie full of world building. It is set in a universe where humans, orcs, elves and fairies co-exist. But you can’t say that they live together in piece because racial differences and prejudices exist even in this world. What was great about this film is the performances that Will Smith & Joel Edgerton deliver together as police officers. Edgerton deserves even more credit as he played an amazing orc. Watch this film if you missed out on it back in 2017.
Shaft
Netflix acquired Shaft and released it as a Netflix original after a limited theatrical run in the US last year. It was the sequel to 2000s Shaft. The specialty about this movie was that it gave us exactly what we’d expect from Uncle Sam. After The Hitman’s Bodyguard hit the pedal with Samuel L. Jackson being unleashed in full force, Shaft did the same. So, if you love uncle Sam. You’re gonna love this movie despite its lower rating or critical reviews. Even at 71, Samuel L. Jackson kicks ass as if he was 40.
Outlaw King
Chris Pine delivers a great performance in this action drama Netflix original. It follows the story of legendary warrior Robert the Bruce who was forced into exile by the English after he was crowned King of Scotland. Then the Scottish king assembles a small army of courageous men who fight together to claim their right. You’ve gotta watch this film is you love ancient battles & war tactics.
Polar
Mads Mikkelsen is capable of so much, and this film proves that. Sure, it isn’t the greatest action movie on Netflix. In fact, the critics berated this movie quite a lot. But it still stands on this list because I love Mads Mikkelsen. He is a one-man army. Watch the film and you’d know what I’m talking about.
