Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Episode 1 – “The New Deal” gave us a blast from the past. It revealed so many new details and this is the reason why we’ve gotta love this series as much as any other MCU property. First, we got a bit more clarity upon Avengers: Endgame’s Time Travel. Secondly, we got to see a new Super Coulson. As for the third detail, we might have seen the first version of MCU’s imperfect Super Soldier Serum.

In “The New Deal,” the Agents of SHIELD follow the Chronicoms back to the year 1931. Ultimately, they find out that the Chronicoms are actually after Wilfred ‘Freddy’ Malick, who will become the father of Gideon Malick (the Hydra leader who was seen in The Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S3) in the future. Freddy & Gideon Malick were crucial for the formation of Hydra & even SHIELD, so it has now become a duty of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to save Freddy.
By saving Freddy, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will be able to save Hydra and in turn also prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from being wiped out of existence. The Chronicoms seek to turn Earth into Chronica 3, and they know that S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to stop them from doing that. So they wish to wipe S.H.I.E.L.D. out of existence (although it’s unclear how that will happen since Marvel’s time travel works differently than others, and wiping S.H.I.E.L.D.’s existence from the past will only create a new timeline, but let’s talk about that later).
Right before the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents try and prevent Freddy from dying at the hands of the Chronicoms, we got to see an exchange between Freddy and the mysterious “Lady in Red.” The Lady had a job for Freddy which would’ve redeemed his family name. She told him:
“I have a job for you. A second chance, you could call it. If you could deliver this to the docks, then my employer will reward you and your family’s glory will be restored.”
She told Freddy to deliver one of the multiple green vials she had. And it is believed that this green vial is actually a first stage Super Soldier Serum that Dr. Erskine will later perfect in the 40s. It is green in color, which actually represents the color of Hydra, while the serum will be turned into blue in the coming years (representing the color of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
This serum is probably not the one that Red Skull took since that event is still years away from happening, and we imagine that multiple changes will happen to this version of the serum. But this delivery that Freddy is supposed to make will probably lead to Schmidt becoming the Red Skull. So, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have to ensure Freddy’s survival so he could continue playing the part in the formation of Hydra.
Let’s see what happens in the coming episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Clark Gregg mentioned that the show is supposed to take place in multiple years, and 1980s is supposed to be one of those years. 1988 was recorded to be the year when the Kree (Mar-Vell) were present on Earth. So, perhaps the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could have something to do with that as well.
Here’s what Clark Gregg said about the events of 1980s:
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t also end up in the ’80s, and that might not even be all of the time periods. We might explore the comic book tropes of those times, some of the cinematic tropes of those times, you know what I mean?”
We won’t be surprised if the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 lead us into Captain Marvel 2. Agents of SHIELD returns next week with the second episode of Season 7.
