Sony’s Morbius Gets Delayed. It Means Venom 2 Will Be Delayed Too

Sony’s Morbius delayed &  Venom 2 too:

People were gearing up for Jared Leto’s Morbius to come out this year. After delays due to COVID-19, it was going to be the 1st Superhero film since the release of Bloodshot. But sadly the contagious Coronavirus is not going to allow that. Sony has now delayed all of their summer movies to 2021. Bloodshot suffered a massive loss, and it didn’t seem like any other summer films of Sony films were going to hit the theatres, let alone make any due to COVID-19 concerns. So, highly anticipated Sony films of the year including Ghostbusters: Afterlife & Morbius have been delayed. And now, we think that even though Venom 2 isn’t a summer movie, it will still be pushed due to Morbius.

The announcement came from Variety as they report that Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been pushed from July 10, 2020 to March 5, 2021, Morbius has been pushed from July 31, 2020 to March 19, 2021, and Peter Rabbit 2 gets its second delay. This time it has been pushed from August 7 to January 15, 2021. No technically, Sony will be releasing 3 superhero films in 2021, if not 4 (Venom 2 has to be delayed as well).

Considering the fact that these delays have left Sony with only one blockbuster project to come out later this year, Venom 2. To survive & keep their stocks up, they might still be planning to release Venom 2 on its originally scheduled release date, i.e. October 2. But a previous plot leak had revealed a very specific connection between Morbius & Venom 2. It is a continuous story arc because the events of Morbius will help establish the events of Venom 2. Here’s how:

Obviously potential spoilers follow, but you’ll have to know them if you wish to find out why Venom 2 has to be pushed as well.

In the Morbius trailer, we saw Jared Leto in an orange prison suit. This teases the fact that he will escape from prison either through a prison break sequence or in some other way. But the plot leak we’re talking about suggested that this is the same prison where Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) & Mac Gargan (Michael Mando) from Homecoming will be present. And it is the same prison where Cletus Kasady will also be present. And a prison break will happen freeing all of these individuals, setting up the next stories of Cletus Kasady (Venom 2), Vulture & Scorpion (Spider-Man 3).

One could argue that these details are way too convenient and may be false. But if you check out the rest of the plot leak and match it with what we’ve seen in the Morbius trailer, all dots seem to be connecting quite well. So, if the plot leak is indeed true, then either the Kasady breaking out of prison along with Morbius detail will have to be reshot, or Venom 2 will have to be delayed. Maybe we’re making a stretch, maybe the plot leak is untrue and Kasady already has a different way to break out of prison. That way, Venom 2 could stay on schedule. But if the production gets hindered in anyway, Venom 2 will certainly be looking at a delay like the rest of the films.

We still have to consider the fact that besides Kasady, there’s probably no other connective tissue between Morbius & Venom. So, using Kasady as a connection would’ve been a smart move. Anyway, Venom 2 isn’t getting delayed for now, but if it does get delayed, then the possible release date for it in 2021 will probably be on April 23, putting the film a month after Morbius, & giving it a proper cushion between Fast 9 & Doctor Strange 2. If it’s not April 23, then it could be May 28. Venom 2 will also have to come out before Spider-Man 3 because Peter Parker will supposedly make a cameo that would lead his story into Spider-Man 3. Anyway, the delay of Morbius opens up the possibility of Black Widow coming out in early August. So let’s see how things go.
