2019 is finally coming to an end and along with it, Hollywood closes ye another chapter. Different genres have given us a lot to remember. The horror genre, in particular, gave us some of its finest moments in this year. They are willing to move on with the flow and continue the tradition of delivering masterpieces the next year as well. The year of 2020 will see some of the most highly anticipated movies coming to the Big Screens. Some of these movies had been under development for quite some time and the fans are really happy that they are finally going to see them in the theatres in the coming year. The next generation of horror movies looks promising. But are you brave enough to take a look? Here is a list of upcoming horror movies of 2020.

 1. The Grudge – January 3

Takashi Shimazu created a horror masterpiece with this Japanese production. The 2004 remake of the 2002 Japanese film came in 2004 under the title The Grudge and it was an instant classic. The movie revolves around a curse that grapples a person with extreme rage and a spirit that is caught between the crossroads of life and death that will haunt any person caught in the cross-fire. Ghost House Pictures are working on the movie re-launch. The story is written by Jeff Buhler of The Midnight Meat Train fame and Nicholas Pesce, the Director of The Eyes of my Mother, is all set to direct it. Sam Raimi is also going to be a part of the production. His earlier dabbling into the horror genre led to The Evil Dead. So the movie is probably in safe hands for now.

 2. The Turning – January 24

The Turning comes from the writers Chad Hayes and Cherry Hayes. The names might sound familiar to you. They were the ones who wrote the story for The Conjuring. The Turning will take us to a creepy house set in the village side. A nanny who is inexperienced and is new to the job is tasked with taking care of two mysterious kids in a very menacing looking house. Finn Wolfhard, Mackenzie Davis, and Brooklyn Prince are in pivotal roles in the movie. The house, as well as the children, hides some really dark secrets that will be revealed when the movie hits the theatres next year.

 3. Fantasy Island – February 6

Blumhouse Productions are known for their low budget but highly acclaimed horror movie productions. They are currently working on a project called Fantasy Island. Set to be released on February 6, the movie is a psychological thriller that will force the audiences into mental scarring and deep trauma. That is what the writers of the movie have said. The movie is about a TV Show where a mysterious host is ready to grant a person any wish they desire in return for a price. The movie will explore that facet of the show in detail. The price that needs to be paid is where the horror begins. If you have seen West World and also loved Cabin in the Woods, Fantasy Island is sure to get your socks flying. A high bar has already been set by Blumhouse. With Fantasy Island, they could either break new ground or fall back into the pits of mediocrity. High hopes are riding on this one. Let us hope for the best.

 4. The Invisible Man – February 28

A rather peculiar release date for a rather peculiar movie! The Invisible Man is a classic science fiction storyline written by the great author H.G Wells. Leigh Whannell takes the story and gives it a classic contemporary horror twist. It will be more of a psychological horror thriller. A woman in her ate the twenties complains that a dark presence is following her and stalking her in her own house. Nobody really knows this but this ‘presence’ is actually his supposed dad’s boyfriend who has somehow become invisible and now torments his ex-girlfriend. Whannell is known for Saw and Insidious. Let us hope he can also push this into the same level of stardom.

 5. A Quiet Place 2 – March 20

The first movie blew us all away. A Quiet Place tells the story of a family living in a post-apocalyptic world that has been taken over by alien creatures with super sensitive hearing abilities. The Abbott family had lost a son at the start of the movie and by the end of the movie, the father was also dead. But Emily Blunt’s character and her children have found a way to fight back and right now they are taking the fight to the creatures instead of them bringing the fight to their backyard. A Quiet Place 2 will be again directed by John Krasinski. Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy are going to play a role in the sequel.

 6. Antlers – April 17

Antlers tell the story of a young boy who has managed to hide something sinister and mysterious in his house. The local sheriff and the boy’s teacher finally decided to see what’s up when things go out of hand. Antlers is the brainchild of Guillermo del Toro and David Goyer, masters of the horror genre. That is why the movie is so highly anticipated. It stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons and the trailer for the movie was extremely well received. The movie will be directed by Scott Cooper, the Director of the acclaimed movie Hostiles.

 7. Candyman – June 12

The 1992 movie was an absolute classic and a treat to watch. This time, the movie is being brought back with added vigour. Candyman will feature Yahya Abdul Mateen II. It tells the story of a spirit connected to an urban legend. The Candyman is a malevolent entity that will appear before you and haunt you till you die with his right handed hook once you utter his name in the mirror 5 times. Jordan Peele, the one who gifted us with Us and Get Out, will be directing the movie.

 8. Last Night in Soho – September 25

Last Night in Soho will reportedly have elements of comedy, horror as well as a psychological thriller. Coming from the Director of Shaun of the Dead, that is understandable. Director Edgar Wright is obsessed with the decade of the 1960’s and this time he has made a movie about it. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor Joy star in a movie which features a girl moving back and forth in time to the 1960’s era London. What she obsesses that time to be and how her actions affect her future and the entire world, in general, is the crux of that story.

 9. Halloween Kills – October 16

After the 2018 reboot of the Halloween franchise gave a shot in the arm to the franchise, the Director wants to make two more sequels to the 2018 movie. The first of the sequels is Halloween Kills. It will feature Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak and Judy Greer in titular roles. Several other actors from the 2018 movie will be returning for the sequel. Anthony Michael Hall will be also part of the cast as Tommy Doyle and Kyle Richards, the actress that played Lindsey Wallace in the original 1978 classic, will reprise her role in the 2020 production.

 10. Army of the Dead – Winter 2020

Nobody is denying the fact that Zack Snyder may be one of the most polarizing characters in the history of entertainment. Many claim his works to be master pieces while some claim he is a maniac who does not know what he is doing. There is still no denying the fact that he is a master of the zombie genre. His 2004 movie Dawn of the Dead is one of the greatest zombie movies to have been ever made. Army of the Dead will be a Netflix Original movie that features Dave Bautista and a motley crew of robbers and burglars that are planning to loot a casino in Las Vegas when the Zombie Apocalypse chimes in.
