Eternals Plot Details:
Marvel’s Eternals could be as surprising as Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be. Or perhaps it could actually tell a tale which is much grander in scale than Guardians, or perhaps any origin story ever was. We’ve all been asking questions about where these Eternals have been all this time when so much had happened on Earth. First, it was an assumption that the story will take place entirely in the past, but the set photos have proven that’s not the case.
We’ve seen Jemma Chan’s Sersi in the present day in a few set photos. We’ve also seen Richard Madden’s Ikaris posing as a human in present-day attire. So, it is clear that the story will indeed take place in recent days, possibly after Endgame. Or there may be a little twist about that and we’ll get to it in a while. A few key plot details have emerged on Reddit through 4Chan. Now obviously anything on these portals has to be taken as a grain of salt. But these details do seem quite legit.
Potential Spoiler Alert, in case any of the following does turn out to be true and we ruin your hype for the film. Let’s take a look at these “leaked” plot details and see if they do make sense:
“Thousands of years ago, the Celestials came to Earth and experimented on humans, creating Deviants and Eternals. Deviants are purple, mindless monsters, and Eternals are humanoid gods with magical abilities. For years, both species fought for dominance in the cosmos. The main planet for Eternals is Olympia, after Titan fell. Eternals are forbidden from having children or mingling with humans. Eternals think lowly of humans and deem themselves superior.
Sersi (Gemma Chan) is a naive and childish soldier who relishes interacting with humans. Ikaris (Richard Madden) is the most powerful Eternal in Olympia who is married with two kids. Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) is a mute and deaf speedster who is discriminated against in this society. Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) is the most intelligent man in the city, who builds weapons and armor despite being a pacifist. Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) is the comedic relief and a refugee from Titan, who is an expert swordsman. Thena (Angelina Jolie) is a mysterious and aggressive commander of the Olympian military. Gilgamesh (Don Lee) is an extremist who is exiled from the city after leading a failed uprising. Druig (Barry Keoghan) is a loner and a refugee from Titan. Ajak (Salma Hayek) is the matriarch of the Eternals who can heal with a kiss.”
So far things do seem quite believable. It is very much in the boundaries of the MCU’s story to date. Deviants have to be Purple as Thanos himself was an Eternal with a Deviant gene. Titan fell long ago as all of us have witnessed. The description of all Eternals seems sensible & legit although the change with Ajak’s persona is quite interesting, to say the least.
We’ve heard in the past that there would be a feud about the Eternals having relationships with humans, and just like in the comics, Sersi & Dane Whitman aka Black Knight will fall in love with each other. That’s what the following plot details seem to be telling us:
“The Eternals receive news about the activities of Earth from a Black Knight, a servant who wields the Ebony Blade and guards humanity from the Deviants when the Eternals are occupied. The Black Knight of this generation is Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington). He and Sersi fall in love. Ajak forbids the relationship. Sersi enlists the help of Sprite (Lia McHugh) for wisdom. Sprite says that there is an ancient gravesite called the Tomb of the Gods that is enchanted with Asgardian magic that can grant the wish of anyone who wishes for it, as long as they deliver the Ebony Blade. Sersi steals it from Dane and wishes for her to become human.
The spell works but quickly backfires. Instead of just Sersi becoming human, Makkari, Phastos, Kingo, Sprite, Druig, Ikaris, and Thena become human as well, and they do not remember their past lives. Dane Whitman is also no longer the Black Knight but an archeologist. In this new reality, Gilgamesh’s uprising succeeded, and the Eternals have become world conquerors all around the galaxy, and Ajak is exiled.
Sersi is the only one whose memories are intact, and she discovers that there are Deviants on Earth, and Gilgamesh’s forces are arriving. To prevent a mass war, Sersi must find her friends and jog their memories to prevent a catastrophe.”
According to what’s mentioned above, we’ve got the explanation for why no one has ever heard of these ancient powerful beings. Because of Sersi, the memory of Eternals has been wiped. That’s why Black Knight hasn’t been seen to date (Dane Whitman having the Ebony Blade in the past does make sense). That’s why all the Eternals have just been ordinary humans who might have been snapped out of existence because of Thanos. And the alternate reality thing falls in line with what the entire Phase is going to be about, i.e. the Multiverse. No one suspects Eternals to do anything with the Multiverse and that’s where this film is going to surprise us, being similar to WandaVision in this context.
Sersi will assemble all the Eternals and remind them of who they used to be so they could prevent Earth from Gilgamesh’s armies. It’s disappointing that Gilgamesh will be an antagonist as he could have been the next Hulk level hero, but let’s see where that goes. What’s interesting is that this movie will tell us about the ancient past of the MCU. We have to know how far in the past the Eternals go, and what all have they forgotten about their past lives. That’s why flashbacks are going to be extremely crucial, and even the plot details do suggest that.
The Reddit post continues:
“It is revealed that Sprite tricked Sersi. She wished for all the Eternals to become human long ago, but she didn’t have access to the Ebony Blade. Instead of the Tomb fulfilling Sersi’s wish, it just simply granted Sprite’s since she asked first. She was tired of being treated like a kid.
The story has numerous flashbacks to the past. We will see ancient civilizations both on Earth and in space. We will see a young Odin and a young Thanos.”
The big twist about Sprite is quite interesting and her motivation also makes sense. Whether or not this story will turn out to be true is yet to be seen but Kudos to whoever wrote this plot leak. Appearances from young Thanos & Odin are something that we’ve been expecting. So, let’s see what happens. Eternals will arrive on November 6, 2020.
