Why Amazon’s “The Boys” Will be Your Favorite Superhero TV Show
The Boys Will be Your Favorite Superhero TV Show:
Superheroes have taken the entertainment world by storm and we see no respite from it any time soon(Not that we are complaining). Superheroes are everywhere, no matter where you look, thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since childhood, we have believed that Superheroes stand for everything that is right. We all have grown up watching heroes like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man fight for what is right. But what if that was not the case? What if these superheroes did not care for humans and did whatever they feel like?
This is where “The Boys” comes in. It introduces us to a world where Superheroes are pricks and do not care about anything except their reputation and image. The Boys takes a different stand on the superhero genre and the basic premise follows around the idea that Power corrupts. In this world, the superheroes are monetized and controlled by corporate entities trying to take control of the world and its governments.
To be clear, The Boys is not a story that only revolves around Superheroes. It is about the impact which the actions of corrupt superheroes have on regular people. The Boys is a satirical Superhero show which shows us the other side of the coin.
The show is based on the Comic Book, which has the same name, created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The series is developed by Erik Kripke, the guy who gave us Supernatural. The show takes heavily from the source material and those who have read the comic books and loved it can rest assured as it is a very Comic accurate adaption.
The story revolves around a small group of people, informally known as The Boys, led by Billy Butcher and consists of four other members, Hughie Campbell – the straight arrow, Frenchie – the guy with all the resources, Mother’s Milk (Yes, that’s what his mother named him) – The Badass Moral Compass and the Female – ‘Supe’ with issues. All these characters work very well together and give us several awesome moments during their pursuit of taking down the Superheroes or Supes.
As you must have guessed already, they decide to go against God-like entities as no one is going to. Each one of them has been wronged by the Superheroes in one way or another, and it is about time someone does something about it. So, Butcher and his Rag-Tag bunch of friends decide to take matters into their own hands to deliver Justice.
The Heroes that they go after, The Seven, seem very identical to the ones we have seen in the DC universe, but there is a twist, The Seven do not give a shit about people. Homelander – The Evil Superman, Queen Maeve – The Alcoholic Wonder Woman, A-Train – Junkie Flash, Deep – Pervy Aquaman, Black Noir – Batman who can play the Piano are the main ones the show focuses on. The latest addition to the team, Starlight, is the only sane Superhero in the team.
This show makes it clear, right off the bat that it is not what you expected a “Superhero” show to be. Within the first act of the first episode, you get a taste of what this show is going to be. It does not hold back on the Violence and the Explicit scenes. The humor in the show is very dark and it does not care about the “Politically correct” fad.
The Boys will surprise you and leave you in awe. It has certain emotional moments as well which make the show wholesome. Although the show is named The Boys, the female characters of the show really stand out. The show works well as it does not work hard in proving one gender better than the other.
The show is out on Amazon Prime, and it is very well received from the critics as well as the fans. If you feel you are bored of seeing the same storyline in the superhero genre, then you must check out this show as it takes a fresh take on the genre.
The Boys is definitely one of the best shows of this year till now and after watching the first season we can definitely say that it has the potential to rise to the ranks of Marvel’s Daredevil in the future.
