Marvel is Reportedly Eyeing Matthew McConaughey to Play an Upcoming MCU Villain

Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest franchise in Hollywood and apparently, every big name wants to work with Marvel these days. Marvel is responsible for this heavy Superhero dynamic adopted by Hollywood and TV shows from DC furthered that cause. Now, every studio wants to plunge their hands into this genre because it is what’s bringing people to the theatres. And since everyone is focusing heavily upon this, even big name actors are getting attached to these projects.

With the Superhero movie drive being on an all-time high, there will be a time where it will be really hard to find an actor. It’s probably just Tom Cruise & Leonardo DiCaprio who haven’t appeared in a Comic book movie yet! But apparently, anyone who joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe becomes a Hollywood A-Lister as their career opens up to so many different possibilities. The same has been happening for DC Superheroes as well.

But Marvel has had the privilege of having some big name talented Hollywood veterans as well. Tilda Swinton, Kurt Russel, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeff Bridges, Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and so many other great actors have been a part of the Marvel family. Now, with the MCU being on an ever-lasting expansive mode, Marvel is going to bring in even more great actors to take part in their projects.

Apparently, the new name that has popped up is none other than Matthew McConaughey. It’s not the first time that his name has been associated to Marvel as back when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was in development, his name came up. In the recent days, he has been allied with playing Norman Osborn in the MCU. Spider-Man: Far From Home didn’t bring in Osborn, but we can’t deny the fact that McConaughey playing the big Marvel villain would just be incredible.

And now, sources close to We Got This Covered claim that Marvel does want to work with the legendary actor, and have been trying to do it for quite a while. According to WGTC, the character he could portray might be the villain of Captain Marvel 2 or Thor 4. The antagonist in Thor 4 has also been rumored to be another female character, so that gets ruled out.

As far as Captain Marvel 2 is concerned, we don’t know what really the case with the timeline of the film is. Logically, it should be another MCU prequel explaining where Captain Marvel was between her first MCU outing & Infinity War. The Kree have to be dealt with, so McConaughey could be a big name Kree antagonist, or he could in fact be Korvac Saga, i.e. the big cosmic villain rumored for Phase 4.

In our opinion, if it is going to happen, it can happen in any upcoming film after Black Widow. We’d love McConaughey to play Nightmare in Doctor Strange 2, or we’d perhaps love him as Norman Osborn itself. Being the Spider-Man villain will make sure that the actor isn’t just a one-off villain and will have a future in the MCU.

If Marvel is indeed looking to work with the actor, then we can be certain that it will happen at some point of time. They tried to get Jake Gyllenhaal for a character for so long, and it’s just now that a character fit for him turned up. They’re trying to do the same for Keanu Reeves as well, so we could assume that Matthew McConaughey would also be in talks with the house that Iron Man built!

Here’s what Feige told Comicbook.com about hiring Reeves for a role:

“We talk to him for almost every film we make. We talk to Keanu Reeves about. I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”

McConaughey could be in a similar line! Let’s see what happens.
