Disney’s The Lion King Becomes the 5th Film of 2019 to Cross a Billion Dollars

Disney has already had the best year at the Box Office and it isn’t over yet. The Lion King has become the 4th Disney film to have crossed the $1 Billion mark and the 5th film overall. What’s great is that after Avengers: Endgame, it has been the quickest film to do so this year. It opened up with $191 Million at the domestic Box Office and that was the record for the greatest Disney Live-Action film opening ever.

As far as the worldwide opening is concerned, The Lion King managed to make $537 Million. That was the 4th biggest film opening every. Here’s how it stands among the top 10:

The first was obviously Avengers: Endgame with $1.222 Billion in 3 days. To follow it we’ve got Avengers: Infinity War ($640 Million), The Fate of the Furious ($541.9 Million), The Lion King ($531 Million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 Million), Jurassic World ($525.5 Million), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 ($483.2 Million), Captain Marvel ($455 Million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($450.8 Million) and Batman v. Superman ($422.5 Million).

Just after the second weekend, The Lion King stood at $962 Million. It had already crossed Toy Story 4 which had a month’s head start. And now after being done with its second Tuesday, the remake of Disney’s classic has managed to go past the $Billion mark. The weekend enabled Aladdin to achieve this feat, and now The Lion King has done that as well. By the end of this weekend, The Lion King will manage to gross past Aladdin, and probably even Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Disney The Lion King Becomes the 5th Film of 2019 to Cross a Billion Dollars

This has been Disney’s biggest year at the Box Office. Captain Marvel began their great year and went on to make $1.128 Billion. It was followed by Dumbo which only made $350 Million but was still quite profitable. Avengers: Endgame then became the biggest film in the entire movie history, having beaten Avatar at the domestic and the worldwide Box Office. It currently stands at $2.793 Billion. Then came Aladdin, which is at $1.111 Billion. Toy Story 4 – $920 Million. It will also claw its way to $1 Billion. And now, The Lion King has also joined the Billion Dollar club and will probably end up being the second biggest film of the year.

But don’t forget, there are 3 more big blockbuster Disney events that are headed to the theatres. The first one’s gonna be Anjelina Jolie’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil which recently dropped its first trailer. With a marketing push, we can be sure that the sequel to Maleficent is going to bring in strong returns. The previous movie managed to go past $750 Million, and the second one could end up somewhere around the same number. To be real, there isn’t much hype for this film so it won’t guarantee another $1 Billion.

But the film that will surely guarantee that is none other than Frozen 2. Yes, it will be another $Billion release without a doubt. The first one went on to make $1.276 Billion worldwide, and the sequel would certainly pull through the Billion Dollar club. It will be the 6th Disney film to do so if Maleficent 2 ends up producing similar returns to its predecessor.

Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises

Then comes the big champion that will end Disney’s year on a high. Star War: The Rise of Skywalker is going to be the finale of the trilogy that was set up by JJ Abrams. Now the visionary director wasn’t around for the second one, but he being back for the third certainly ensures a major success. Star Wars 9 will be the 7th Disney film in the $Billion club and that will be a massive record!

Disney’s Box Office for the films that they’ve put out this year has gone past $7 Billion already. By the end of the year, it could be 10! Holy shit…
