Shazam! may not have been the commercial success that WB would have hoped for, but it most certainly was a critical success. Everyone that saw the film hailed it and we’re ready for more sequels starring Zachary Levi. The only disappointment that we have is that Shazam! will never get to crossover with the likes of Batman & Superman the way we want him to.
A headless Superman showed up in Shazam! and we only saw toys when it came to Batman. It was a film very much set up in the DCEU but will never get to interact with the big guns of the shared Universe. WB has literally failed to understand the true potential of what could have been an insanely successfully continued story. They have restarted things to give them a new direction. The Batman is the first to get a reboot and Superman could also follow the same direction. But we really hope that these heroes could meet Shazam! in a future multiverse set up.
Well, for that to happen, The Batman will have to be a major success first. We don’t know about the future of Superman, but Batman is certainly not going anywhere. He has been WB’s biggest seller of all time and there’s a specific reason behind it. Even Zachary Levi agrees to this as he recently claimed that “Batman Is Way Sexier Than Superman.”
“There’s a reason why Batman is one of the most successful characters. In fact, from a TV and film standpoint, Batman is far more successful than Superman, right? Although Superman is a far more popular character in the annals of history, so why is that? Think about it. Superman — and by the way, I love Superman — Superman is the ultimate boy scout. Superman is like tried and true, he’s always gonna choose right, and I love that because Chuck and Shazam are kind of similar in that regard, I love that about Superman.
But for the world we live in, and all of the things we kind of hold up and value and whatever, I mean, Batman’s way sexier. Batman’s like, he’s got issues [laughs].”
Batman fits in the real world setting which is not always bright and filled with optimism. The world has some darker truths to it and that’s where Batman comes in feeling much more believable. That’s why the world truly cares about Batman. If Matt Reeves doesn’t deliver us the one true Batman, then things are gonna go haywire! WB has been doing weird things with Batman in the last few years. Zack Snyder made Batsy a killer, & then Titans also followed up on that. The upcoming Batman has to be perfect in every way.
If The Batman does turn out to be a success, then we could certainly look for crossovers down the line. For now, Matt Reeves was looking for something very specific and that’s why he chose Robert Pattinson. Picking the right actor was extremely important for Reeves’ grand plan. Recently, a report from Collider suggested how Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult were the only true contenders for the role. The report gave the statement of one WB insider:
“Did they embody the character? How did their eyes look and act? Is there a specialness to them? Those were the questions Reeves and the studio wanted answered. (Reeves) wanted very specific things. He knew what he was looking for.”
Let’s hope that all the upcoming DC films turn out to be successful. The success of every solo film is what will lead us to epic crossovers. Seeing Shazam! join the Justice League would be a dream come true. But that dream has probably been relayed for 6-10 years!
The current slate of the upcoming DC Films looks like this:
Joker (October 4) – Birds of Prey (February 13, 2020) – Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5, 2020) – The Batman (June 25, 2021) – The Suicide Squad (August 5, 2021) – Aquaman 2 (December 16, 2022).
