Avengers: Endgame Directors Address Why Black Widow Didn’t Get a Funeral

All the Avengers do deserve credit for taking down Thanos and bringing everyone back, but it is down to 3 heroes who actually made the big sacrifice play to make things good again! Iron Man obviously snapped Thanos and his army, and Hulk brought all the dusted back to the land of the living. But it was Black Widow who made it all possible. She is the unsung hero of Endgame and it’s extremely unfortunate that the upcoming solo movie would be the last of her.

It has been so long since people have been asking this same question of why exactly did Black Widow not get a funeral like Tony Stark? Here’s what the writers of Endgame Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had to say about it a while back:

“Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back. She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that’s a thing she would trade for. Tony gets a funeral. Natasha doesn’t. That’s partly because Tony’s this massive public figure and she’s been a cipher the whole time. It wasn’t necessarily honest to the character to give her a funeral.”

And now co-director Joe Russo has sufficed it in one single line. He told Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con:

“Well, Natasha has another movie coming out. Tony does not have another movie coming out.”

He then went on to explain this sentiment behind it saying:

“When you’re dealing with storytelling real estate in a three-hour movie, there’s only so much of it, and someone else has another film coming, there’s always the opportunity to bring closure in that other movie. In this movie, we had to bring closure to Tony Stark.”

The Black Widow movie comes out on May 1, 2020, and that’s when we get to say goodbye to Natasha Romanoff.
