Avengers: Endgame Directors Reveal More Details About Decapitated Captain America Scene

As we keep getting closer to the BluRay release of the biggest movie of all time, we keep getting more details about the film. But right now we’re going to talk about a scene that was revealed a few days ago. A really dark scene that may have haunted little Captain America fanboys for life. This scene would have shown Thanos throwing the decapitated head of Captain America at the feet of the Avengers.

The writers of Avengers: Endgame, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that Thanos from 2014 would have first gone on to fight the Avengers in that year and kill them for good. Then he would have arrived to 2023 with proof that he had already defeated them once and is about to do that again!

Here’s what they had to say during their Comic-Con panel:

“Stephen McFeely – When Thanos comes back, and he comes through a hole that Nebula has created and all that, we had to decide what the playing field was for that final battle. And one of the ideas was that she opens a time rift, he walks through from 2014 Earth, where he’s already gone and laid waste to the whole place. And so our heroes come out of the dust, they see this figure walking toward them, he crosses from light to dark or whatever, and it’s Thanos, and he tosses something at their feet. And it rolls and lands at Steve’s feet, and it’s his own head.

Christopher Markus – With the helmet still on.”

This scene sounds extremely dark and it would have been quite gritty. But at the same time, we do like the sound of it because Cap’s worthiness post seeing his own head, him smashing Thanos with the hammer, and then getting beat up real bad would have worked so well. People were already frightened seeing his Shield getting smashed, but the entire moment would have gotten even more terrifying having seen what’s been described above.

But, pulling it off would have been kinda complicated and perhaps more screen time would have been required. With all that, it’s still good to know that it wasn’t the directors who scrapped this scene. Upon being asked by IMDb host Kevin Smith as to who removed the scene, the directors said:

“Joe – It wasn’t us!

Anthony – It was a favorite. It was a complicated idea [to pull off].

Joe – The four of us sat in a room for months going, ‘How do we make Captain America’s severed head work? We can’t figure out where we go once he throws his head at his feet, where does the story go?’”

Endgame Captain America Infinity War

It would have become kinda repetitive showing Thanos from 2014 to go and defeat the Avengers since we already saw him doing that in Infinity War. But, we would have felt the tension if he straight away showed up in 2023 and we had the head rolling down to Cap’s feet. Then again, people would have been confused as to how all this happened. It’s exactly as Anthony Russo said, “Complicated.” But it could be fixed.

They could have shown us, Thanos, deciding to invade Earth and beat the Avengers in 2014. Then as soon as the Avengers assembled and the two parties move in to fight each other, the scene would have cut to Nebula setting up the entry of Thanos’ ship in 2023. Then would have followed with the entry of Thanos, the devastation of the Avengers HQ, followed by Thanos throwing Cap’s head. This would have intended that Thanos easily won the battle in 2014, creating an alternate timeline.

The great part about this is that, 2 scenes would have been running in parallels. There’s one where the Avengers have all the stones and the Hulk’s snap happens. Everything has been restored to the way it was, and the Avengers finally feel a sense of victory. Then there’s the other one where the Avengers fight Thanos in 2014 and lose even badly than they did in Infinity War. But even with this fix, we have to admit that an already complicated film would have become even more complex and confusing!
