People have been asking for a solo Black Widow movie for almost 10 years and finally, in 2020, they’re going to get their wishes fulfilled. Ideally, the film should be an origin story as that is what every one of the previous MCU movies involving Black Widow has hinted at, but a recent rumor suggested otherwise. Moving past that dilemma, it is good to know that Black Widow has finally begun production.
Reports earlier suggested that the film will start to shoot in June, but that isn’t the case apparently. We got a few photos from Ørsta, Norway which confirmed that ScarJo has arrived at the location, and today we’ve got a few leaks which suggest that the shooting is running in full flow. Take a look:

Rumor suggested that this film could take place in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War. Looking at ScarJo’s hair, it might turn out to be true because sported long hair in Civil War, and it will all fall into place really well. After Civil War, we saw Black Widow appear in Infinity War forming a little group of Secret Avengers after the Sokovia Accords were put in motion. Infinity War took place 2 years after Civil War and we don’t exactly know when Widow teamed up with Steve and Sam.
So we could assume that there could at least a 1-year window which could be salvaged if this rumor stated above is actually true. Logically it means that after giving Tony a bit of a lecture about his attitude, Black Widow went solo for a while, did her own missions, took down Taskmaster and teamed up with Captain America, Falcon, and Wanda. This would also create room for the likes of Captain America and Falcon to have a cameo in there somewhere.
Looking at ScarJo set photos, she doesn’t have any CGI tracking dots on her face that would make her look younger, nor is there any specific makeup. So, it does seem that BWidow is running around in times closer to the present. If this is the case, then we surely need to ask ourselves, do we really want a Black Widow movie set in between Civil War & Infinity War?
We’ve seen Black Widow grow and evolve over the years. Giving us a Black Widow movie that takes place after Civil War will not offer us any change in her character. There will be nothing new to watch. The Black Widow solo movie should take place before Iron Man and deal with the darker past that Natasha has had. That’s what has been teased multiple times but never shown. We’ve seen everything but that.
So, it is entirely possible that the scenes we see in the set photos do involve a younger version of the character. ScarJo already looks too young after all. We spent so many years believing Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst were school kids in Spider-Man, so we can pretend Black Widow to be looking around 10-15 yours younger than what she is now. I know that all of what I’ve said doesn’t make total sense but we just cannot have a Black Widow movie set after Civil War.
Marvel has been setting up the Budapest mystery since the first Avengers movie, and they brought it up again in Endgame. That can’t just be a throwaway line. People are excited to know. Age of Ultron teased the origin of Widow, and we need to see that too. We also need to see her brief encounters with the Winter Soldier prior to Captain America 2. So, the upcoming solo movie should deal with all that while involving Taskmaster, and not some side mission taking place after Civil War.
Let’s see what happens. Black Widow comes out on May 1, 2020.
