Marvel’s The Eternals will supposedly be the third MCU film to come out post the Infinity Saga, and it will bring another unique ensemble cast into the vast confounds of the MCU. Only this time, the long drawn history of the MCU will be explored in a story taking place a millennia ago. This will be the ultimate prequel that may also retcon some things of the present that we’ve seen over the years.
Deadline reported a new rumor which stated that suggested Doctor Strange 2 to be replacing The Eternals for its supposed 2020 release, but with the way things are moving forward with this film, we can put that rumor to rest because Marvel is picking up pace with this particular film. It will be directed by Chloe Zhao who will take up the script written by the brothers, Ryan and Matthew Firpo. The movie is supposed to begin production by August.
The cast of the movie has also started to come together as Angelina Jolie is onboard, and THR dropped the exclusive that the Big Sick star Kumail Nanjiani is joining The Eternals. While we didn’t really know what character is to be played by these two, Jolie was assumed to be playing the female lead, i.e. Sersi. The report from THR has now confirmed her role in the film and what we thought was absolutely right. Here’s what they wrote:
“Jolie is understood to be playing the character named Sersi, a more outgoing Eternal who has not been afraid to moving amongst humankind.”
Now, this character just got a lot of weight with Jolie attached to it and the casting is totally spot on! It will be interesting to see who gets cast as Ikaris, the love interest of Sersi. We can be 99% sure that it is not going to be Kumail Nanjiani as the internet would just lose its mind if that’s the case! Marvel may be invincible but even they are not ready to face that. The fact that Kumail has been brought on to the film itself intrigues us as Marvel is certainly looking to bring in a whole lot of cultural diversity into the mix.
The Eternals are going to start yet another potential trilogy that Marvel is going to run in the future of the MCU. It is entirely plausible that we will see some characters from the franchise appear in present movies as well. Here’s what Kevin Feige said of the Eternals in an interview last year:
“Your reaction about not being familiar with the Eternals is perfect, because most people weren’t familiar with Guardians [of the Galaxy] and believe it or not there were people that were not familiar with Avengers or with Iron Man. So for us, its finding great stories whether people have heard of them or not and bring them to the big screen in as amazing a way as we can.”
He then talked to Collider recently and teased the fact that The Eternals will be a project that will expand the cosmic boundaries of the MCU in ways we cannot imagine yet. Here’s what he said:
“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.
You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
Here’s the synopsis of The Eternals running around the internet:
“The story of ‘THE ETERNALS’ is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
