Captain Marvel Theory Reveals What SHIELD Had Been Doing With The Tesseract Before The Avengers
The release of Captain Marvel on March 8th, 2019 changed the way fandom viewed the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The advent of Carol Danvers into the movie canon leads to all sorts of complications and help for the current Avengers roster. The movie has also presented the fandom with an entirely new set of facts regarding the dynamics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a lot of footage for the fans to analyze.
It also seems that with the release of Captain Marvel, we have also received some much-needed perspective with regard to the mysterious life of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We get to see Samuel L Jackson reprise his role as the director of a highly covert intelligence agency but only this time he is an operative aiding and pursuing the anomaly known as Carol Danvers.
Without revealing too much about the plot, during the events of Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers is exposed to the Tesseract and this exposure ends up granting the woman all sorts of powers including energy manipulation. This sort of feat seemed incredulous to someone as unsuspecting as Fury and it seems to have fuelled his agenda when he did take over the operational control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It is revealed in the first Avengers movie that SHIELD was in possession of weapons manufactured by HYDRA using the Tesseract and they even had blueprints to make more. But if this theory posted by u/Britator posted on r/fantheories is to be believed then the aim of SHIELD’s research was much more sinister than what the Avengers uncovered. The implication made by the user is clear in all respects. It is the proposition of this fan that SHIELD was never trying to create weapons out of the space stones as the Avengers thought to have found out and neither were they trying to use the infinity stone as a source of unlimited sustainable energy but rather the stone was being researched in a completely different way.
It is the implication presented by this theory that the space stone was being analysed by SHIELD to create super powered soldiers like Carol Danvers. The idea being that SHIELD was trying to resurrect the super soldier program that created Steve Rogers only this time the secret sauce was not a super soldier serum but the Tesseract and the space stone that resided within.
The entire idea may seem far-fetched but it does put a reliable and feasible spin on the events of the first Avengers movie. Given the recent developments in Captain Marvel, it is equally likely that Director Fury was looking to recreate the experiment performed on Carol Danvers rather than chasing 50 year old HYDRA ghosts in the form of weaponized technology. It will fit in with the modus operandi of the US government.
There have been clear incidents in the past, even in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where scientists have rigorously tried to recreate the super soldier serum, one such incident occurred during the events of The Incredible Hulk where Dr. Banner researched gamma radiation in hopes of unlocking the formula.
It is the recurring trope of Marvel comics that no such research will ever be fulfilled and if the theory regarding the secret operations of SHIELD is to be believed then it is entirely possible that SHIELD was actually researching the space stone to make more super soldiers, unlike Captain Marvel herself, but it is also clear to notice that the intelligence organisation did not have much luck or progress in this regard.
So this means that either the SHIELD scientists are complete idiots or the organization was way better in covering their tracks than anyone ever gave them credit, for it seems that the events of Avengers 1 halted any of SHIELD’s plan to develop the super soldier serum as they now faced a more imminent threat in the form of Loki.
