You think you know everything there is to know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe? You think you know everything there is to know about the heroes? You think you know everything there is to know about Infinity War? If your answer to those questions were yes, then you could not be more wrong. As time passes by, more and more information regarding the MCU and the potential skyscraper wreckers it avoided along the way are coming to light. And one of the mother lodes just landed on our laps. There was a possibility, as it turns out, that the famous scene where Thor pierces Thanos chest with the Storm breaker did not even happen the way it did in the movie!! Don’t believe us?!?! Presenting – Famous Thor vs Thanos scene in Avengers Infinity War almost did not happen!!!
Early concept art for the Infinity War scenes in the Battle of Wakanda shows that the scene in question was markedly different than the one we saw in the movie. In that scene, Thor is seen launching his weapon onto Thanos, with Storm Breaker eventually landing on Thanos’ chest. The original plan was to let that scene have a lot of Avengers helping Thor. Thor was never planned to be alone when fighting Thanos. He was supposed to have back up.
Infinity War’s end saw the fall of the good guys from grace. Thanos won and the Earth’s mightiest heroes lost. The fight was one-sided from the very beginning. Thanos and his army overwhelmed the Avengers via sheer numbers.
The fight took a turn for the better when Thor entered the fight. In one swing, he destroyed half of the Outrider army, destroyed a landing ship and turned the fight in the Avengers favour. When he demanded Thanos come to him (which he did), the ensuing fight was a sight for sore eyes.
Thor tore through Thanos’ attacks like paper but lost the battle when he went for the wrong body part. Thanos won on a technicality but had Thor would have had help from the other Avengers like the concept art shows us, maybe the fight would have ended differently. Hell, maybe even Infinity War would have ended differently.
Marvel Studios has recently released Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War: The Art of the Movie. It is a book of unused concept arts from the original movie draft. One of the concept art shows Thanos being overwhelmed by an army of Earth’s mightiest heroes in what looks like a Wakandan landscape in the background.
Aiding Thor in this fight are Doctor Strange, Mantis, Drax, Spider-Man and Iron Man. Thor is about to give Thanos the killing blow. Along the ride are also Black Widow, Captain America, and the Hulk, whom Thanos manages to fend off for the time being.
Interestingly, the appearance of the Hulk rather than a Hulkbuster laden Bruce Banner is sure to raise a lot of eyebrows regarding what was the original plotline for the movie.
Why would the writers want Bruce Banner to transform into the Hulk? Surely Thor and the Strom Breaker would be the Avengers’ wild card in the fight but had it also included the Hulk, the fight would have been over in a second. But we guess the Studio had other plans for Banner. They are developing a rather complete story arc for the character and maybe this is why they decided to undertake some course correction for the character.
Nevertheless, the revelation of such a scene being even considered for Infinity war is enough to blow all our collective minds.
Avengers: Infinity War had already witnessed its DVD and Blu-Ray release. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment
