Many have tried. Many have succeeded and many have failed. The Infinity Gauntlet is a tricky little thing to wield. If wielded the right way, it can make you a God. If wore or used in a wrong manner, it can turn you to dust. Each stone embedded in the Infinity Gauntlet gives you total control over one aspect of the universe.
Soul, Power, Reality, Space, Mind and Time – each stone gives you command over one of these forces respectively. Holding just one of them in your bare hands might be too much power for one mere mortal. Imagine holding all six of them simultaneously!!
Such a power would be beyond imagination. And that is why every known supervillain in the Marvel Comics Universe longs for that kind of power to reshape the universe at their own personal will. And that is exactly why all the heroes loath the gauntlet and its powers to the core.
Even still, many heroes have tried wearing the Gauntlet. That list is long and it is about to add another member to it pretty soon. Turns out, another popular superhero has been slated to wear the Infinity Gauntlet next year in 2019 and it is none other than Wolverine!! Presenting – Marvel Comics Update – Marvel wants Wolverine to wield the Infinity Gauntlet next year!!!
Wolverine has had a rocky past these previous few years in the Marvel Comics Universe. There was the acclaimed Death of Wolverine arc that bought Wolverine literally to the abyss of death. Logan died a sorrowful death and the void was never really fulfilled.
Even though Wolverine was succeeded by a doppelganger from another universe, X-23 as well as Daken, the vacuum still remained as it is. You really cannot replace Wolverine. He is just that much special. As a result, Marvel was forced to sow seeds of Wolverine’s resurrection in the Hunt for Wolverine storyline and bring Wolverine back from the dead in the following Return of the Wolverine story arcs.
The last image we had of Wolverine was the Wolverine holding the space stone in his hands, signaling the guy is ready to take on the big leagues. Wolverine has always been down to earth and all his fights have been for the little guy.
He will claw at the enemy, defeat giants, and juggernauts but at the end of the day, his victory was always for the common masses. In the next story arc though, Wolverine will go truly cosmic. The Thor issues by Jason Aaron revealed how Wolverine merged with the Phoenix Force and became a cosmic entity. If Marvel Comics is truly saying what we think it does, then Wolverine is going to play God one more time and that too, in the mainstream continuity.
What happens when the Wolverine wears the very thing that at one point of time was responsible for the death of half of all life in the universe? What happens when a mentally unstable and violent personality gets hold of a weapon that can erase the whole universe in just a snap? A truly scary thought if you ask us.
But it is also an interesting one. Thanos for all his flaws was a pretty composed structure. He knew how to bend the rules and was always ready to go with the “ends justify the means” flow. But he always ensured that there were an order and discipline to the way he did things. That is why the supervillain is so famous in the Marvel Universe. You cannot have organized crime without some law and order.
If it would have been any other villain other than Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet in the 1991 comic book series of the same name, the storyline would probably not have been so famous. While Thanos is more into discipline and order, Wolverine is none of those things. He will gut you, take the wrong way to do the right thing and make sure his is the last face you remember before he stabs you in the back lest you stop crossing paths with him.
Now imagine a guy as twisted and Machiavellian as that, getting hold of the six Infinity Stones and ruling over the whole universe. We will give you a glimpse – ABSOLUTE CHAOS!!!!
Gerry Duggan and Andy MacDonald are currently working on a storyline that will show the readers when, where and how Wolverine ends up wielding the Infinity Stone in his hands. Last year, the reveal of Wolverine being the owner of the Space Stone sent chills down every body’s spines.
It now looks like Wolverine won’t just be carrying one, but all the six Infinity Stones at his fingertips. The storyline in question is called Wolverine: Infinity watch and the cover art for the very first issue of the arc have been officially released online. The artwork has been done by the talented Giuseppe Camuncoli, who has been a long time Marvel Comics ally, and it shows the Infinity Gauntlet in all its glory with Wolverine’s signature adamantium claws popping out from under it.
The official storyline is yet to be revealed. The publishers, the writers, and the artists have decided to stay mum when it comes to revealing any plot details regarding the script of the storyline. But we do know that the said story arc will feature one more anti-hero. Wolverine will either work with or against the Norse God of lies, stories, and mischief, Loki Laufeyson in the upcoming Wolverine: infinity Watch storyline.
Infinity Watch is traditionally a group of superheroes that are tasked to protect the Infinity Stones from coming together or falling into the wrong hands. The group was first formed by Adam Warlock after the events of the Infinity Gauntlet arc.
Loki is currently being featured in Infinity war. He has formed his own version of the Infinity Watch with the purpose of stopping Requiem, who wants to reshape the very fabric of reality using the six Infinity Stones. Currently, Loki has traveled to the end of time to realize that the Infinity Stones are actually a product of the mythical Quarry of Gods, where a group of Celestials has produced hundreds of thousands of Infinity Stones from scratch.
As for Wolverine, he is currently busy in his own troubles. Gerry Dugan is neck deep in the Return of Wolverine storyline and Logan will have a long time to go before he gets out of that wet swamp for Wolverine: Infinity Watch.
It still remains to be shown how the two characters will be coming together for the upcoming issue. Loki is on his own personal expedition to become a God. He has come face to face with the guys that literally create Infinity Stones. Wolverine is also struggling with his own troubles. Is it that Loki, on his quest to gain true Godhood, stumbles across a certain clawed maniac with an attitude problem and somehow, Loki’s Infinity Stones end up with the mutant hero?
The storyline is still a bit away before it is released. There will be more updates pretty soon. Until then, we can all guess and cook our own theories. But until Marvel releases an official statement, they will be unproven and should all be taken with a pinch of salt.
Wolverine last appeared in the movies in Logan. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
In the near future, a weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) at a remote outpost on the Mexican border. His plan to hide from the outside world gets upended when he meets a young mutant (Dafne Keen) who is very much like him. Logan must now protect the girl and battle the dark forces that want to capture her.
The last Marvel movie that featured Loki was Avengers: Infinity War. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artefacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just… do things
