This film is based on a video game with the same title, which was released in 2016 by the Pokemon franchise. The game also features Tim with Detective Pikachu and is set in Ryme City, which is a bustling city all filled with people and Pokemon. In the video game, Detective Pikachu pursues his capability to use the Pokemon attacks with a special ability to have a voice to communicate with his partner and that really increases compatibility between the two.
