Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3:
Adam Warlock is one of the strongest individuals in the entire Marvel Universe. He played a very crucial role in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline but since he wasn’t introduced anywhere before Avengers: Infinity War, the writers, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely took a different route altogether. The big credit to establish the cosmic side of Marvel properly surely goes to James Gunn as he introduced so many aspects from which Marvel could build upon later. One of those aspects was the tease of Adam Warlock.
Warlock will obviously not be involved in the big events related to Thanos as he was set up to make his entry later on in Phase 4. The first Guardians movie gave us a tease with Warlock’s cocoon in the Collector’s vault and then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had Ayesha create an unseen being which is supposed to be “the next step in our evolution” who would be “more capable of destroying the Guardians the Galaxy.” She simply called the being as Adam which gave us the confirmation that Adam will be introduced in the third film and he may take on the Guardians as a villain first before he becomes the hero we know from the comics.
James Gunn obviously finished the script of Vol. 3 and his script most likely involved Adam in the greater deal of events that were to take place in the final Guardians movie in Phase 4. But with him getting fired from the Director’s chair, the next Guardians film has been put on an indefinite hold until Disney decides what they would do with it. They are obviously in search of a new Director to helm the film but James Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn has confirmed that Disney will indeed be using Gunn’s script instead of going for the full rewrite.
He said:
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air.”
But now new things have come into the light suggesting otherwise. The writer who created Thanos and heavily developed Adam Warlock (the co-creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby), Jim Starlin appeared at ACE Comic-Con and he revealed that he is unsure whether Adam Warlock will be involved in the future of the MCU or not. He told Chuck Load of Comics:
“At the time we’re recording this, the third Guardians movie is on indefinite hold. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I have my suspicions who they’re going to use for a director, but I’m not in that loop, so my guess is as good as anything you read online.”
Disney is currently figuring things out, and we don’t know who they are going to hire. Even though Sean Gunn confirmed that Disney intends to use James Gunn’s script, Starlin teases that it may get heavy rewrites (which is obvious when a new Director is involved), and Warlock’s part may or may not be removed completely:
“So how much of Gunn’s script remains, how much of the game plan using Warlock in this movie and maybe down the line, you know, Marvel has their own master plan that supersedes all the movies. Feige is basically the captain of that ship, so I don’t know what he has planned, but I have high hopes that we’ll see old Adam coming to life.”
Adam Warlock has to be brought into the cosmic world of the MCU now as he is the key to future Universe building. As for appearing in Avengers: Infinity War Joe Russo previously explained to ComicBook.com why Warlock was not included in the film:
“Our job as we said a million times is to tell the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not to do direct adaptations of the comics because we’re comic book fans. I have no interest as a director in telling a story that’s already been told or in seeing one that’s already been told. If I know all the events story as they’re going to happen then what’s the point of going to the film? We want to keep surprising audiences and continue the story that started with Iron Man […] a decade ago.”
Hopefully, Disney gets a new Director very quickly, James Gunn’s script gets fully utilized and Adam Warlock gets the introduction in the way Gunn has intended. We need to see the epic conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as Gunn planned otherwise many people might just end up boycotting Vol. 3 completely!
