While Infinity War portrayed so many Superheroes at once, it was largely a story about Thanos and Thor with a bit of Iron Man in the support. Just imagine, Thor managed to put Iron Man on the back foot in an Avengers movie and as compared to those two, Captain America only had an extended cameo! But it is obvious to say that Thanos was the one who stole the show at the end. Now Thor will get his shot at redemption in Avengers 4.
After Infinity War came out, co-director Joe Russo talked about the fact that this would have been Thor’s movie only if he would have gone for the kill shot, and not miss his mark. He talked about Thor’s arc in the film:
“I think he’s been on a very complicated journey where he struggles with his ability to feel worthy and be worthy. I think he’s looking for a moral compass in his life. What we love about him in Infinity War is that he has been torn down to his essential parts and he goes on a hero’s journey which a very underdog journey for someone of his stature because he has lost everything in his life. In a lot of ways he is the driving hero’s arc of the movie which stands in direct opposition to Thanos’ argument. I would argue that head for chopped his head off at the end of the movie that the movie will belong to Thor but because he didn’t it belongs to Thanos.”
Joe Russo even said that Thor is equally to be blamed for the loss of Avengers. Most of the blame lies on Star-Lord, but Thor also couldn’t finish the fight when he had a shot. He said:
“I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that ax into Thanos chest and not his head. Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge. Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened. These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories. Stories can teach us things and that we should try to see every choice from the perspective of the character that made the choice.”
Now you would want Thor to finally have his revenge in Avengers 4. Throughout his run in the MCU, he has lost everyone and everything one by one. His mother, father, brother, friends, best friend, planet and half the people of the entire universe have been taken away because he could not do enough to save them!
Infinity War humanized a God for us. It gave us some great moments involving Thor, but a real sad moment at the very end.
Now every surviving hero would want to take the revenge from Thanos. The likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Nebula, and Thor are the ones who are supposed to have another encounter with the Mad Titan.
You could argue that Nebula must get to have the killing blow against Thanos because of the immense suffering she has endured throughout her life. But what Thanos recently did to Thor started a big brawl recently.
Captain Marvel, Hulk and Iron Man are the likely individuals who could give Thanos a massive beat down in Avengers 4, but it has to be Thor who gets to have the final killing blow. He’s lost to Thanos twice, so he really needs to have a big ending. He deserves it more than anyone else.
Avengers 4 will supposedly be the final movie of Captain America and Iron Man, but even Hemsworth’s contract has ended with Avengers 4. So, apart from Steve and Tony, Thor also needs to have a big moment if he is to go out of the MCU after Avengers 4.
Also, it would be amazing to see Thor use the Strombreaker for the final blow. So, hopefully, he will get yet another shot at redemption against Thanos because he truly deserves it. For once, he has to be the one who gets to finish things for good. Rest we will only find out who gets to kill Thanos once Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
