Fantastic Beasts is an extension of the amazing Harry Potter mythos. The first movie expanded upon the adventures of Newt Scamander and highlighted upon another, long overlooked villain in the Wizard Universe – Grindelwald. But it failed to show Grindelwald in enough spotlight. The second movie titled Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald will show us many younger versions of the legacy Harry Potter movie characters and most importantly, expand upon the rising threat of Grindelwald, the predecessor, and inspiration to Lord Voldemort. To that end, the movie show-runners have already confirmed that there is another new character in the sequel that will play a crucial role in the movie. Presenting – New Fantastic Beasts Character 2 with a major role in the movie revealed!!!!
It has always been open to speculation if there ever will be a clear connection to Voldemort in the movie. There were rumours going around that a toddler Voldemort might be teased in the movie scenes but it was never confirmed. That theory has died an untimely death with no news about it surfacing anymore. However, there are other ways a character can be teased in the prequels. And Fantastic Beasts 2 just found a novel way to indirectly tease Lord Voldemort in the movie via a well- known character.
It is Nagini. After long hours of empty rumours reaching our ears, we can finally say with absolute certainty that Nagini, Lord Voldemort’s pet snake that also doubled down as his seventh and final Horcrux, is also making an appearance in the movie. But the story does not end there. The snake woman will be having a pivotal role in the sequel and will play a major role in driving the plot direction forward.
Nagini is a woman, from the Harry Potter books, who can assume a snake form at will. But it is both a power and a curse. There is a constant battle going on between her human side and an animal side. And the family she belongs to have all fallen prey to their animal side, with their human side being lost forever and them becoming true beasts.
Nagini will one day become a snake permanently. But for now, she is alive, human and kicking and is at that stage of life where when can freely transform between her human form, into a snake form and back. She also happens to be a lethally formidable opponent in the trailer scenes.
Actress Claudia Kim plays Nagini in the movie and she had this to say about her character in an interview with EW as far as her role in the future of the Fantastic Beasts universe was concerned:
“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini. You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character. She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking. She has powers that are yet to be explored. I can’t confirm she has powers like wizards have. And she doesn’t have a wand.”
The early theories claimed Nagini was an Animagus. But that has been proved wrong. The prevailing theory is that Nagini is a highly magic-sensitive human being like Credence from Fantastic Beasts 1. But while Credence channeled his magical energies into becoming an Obscurial due to lack of Formal training, Nagini turns herself into a snake-like dragon as she also lacks a wand or any formal training in the magical arts. This is indeed an even more interesting theory and we hope it comes true.
Claudia Kim also added later in her interview that her character has a lot of things to do in the future:
“Sometimes I introduce myself as ‘Credence’s only friend. It’s amazing these two broken souls are able to form some kind of friendship within the circus. Credence is special to her because he encourages her to use her power.”
“I’ve seen so many videos and fan theories on YouTube. Everyone is so good at analyzing every element there is. I’ve been very careful and aware that I should not spoil it for anybody. But I’ve been dying to say something!”
