Doctor Strange 2: Director Scott Derrickson Teases The Sequel Story

Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving towards its next phase and we will be seeing the baton passed from the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor to Spidey, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. Ant-Man and the Guardians will obviously tag along but they will be around for just one movie which will end their trilogy, and the rest of the heroes will actually carry the shared Universe on their shoulders with at least 2 solo movies each to offer us. Phase 4 will start with Spider-Man: Far From Home and then we will see Doctor Strange 2.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 put on an indefinite hold, Marvel will now be looking for a big name movie to be fast-tracked and that is going to be none other than Doctor Strange 2. It was supposed to be scheduled for a November Release in 2020, but now it seems that in order to fill the void of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Doctor Strange 2 would surely be fast-tracked and it may actually hit the May 1 Release date in 2020 and that will make it the second movie of Phase 4.

The first movie was directed by Scott Derrickson, and till now, he is likely to return for the sequel as well. Doctor Strange was a big success among the critics as it was rated 87% Fresh on the Rotten Tomatoes, and it was an even bigger success at the Box Office since it being an origin story managed to bring in a hefty $677 Million worldwide. It also introduced a variety of great characters and some potential villains for the future. Kaecilius and Dormammu were the villains for the first movie, and Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) was set up as the nemesis for the future Doctor Strange movies.

But it seems that Mordo’s path to villainy will only be built further in Doctor Strange 2 and according to the screenwriter for Doctor Strange, C. Robert Cargill the villain of the sequel is gonna be none other than Nightmare. While we don’t really know about the plot of the upcoming film, Director Scott Derrickson placed Doctor Strange fans on red alert when he tweeted a comic book tile which seems to have been pulled from the “What If?” comic book storyline of 1977. The specific issue which is in focus here is #18 where Doctor Strange was forced to make a choice between Eternity and Dormammu.

We have only seen the introduction of Dormammu on the big screen while Eternity was only teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But still, there is a lot of work that has to be done for this storyline to get featured in the MCU. Here’s what the director tweeted:

So does this mean that we will see the proper introduction of Eternity into the MCU? It could be that. The movie is supposed to go under production mid-2019 and Benedict Cumberbatch just renewed his contract with Marvel and will be getting a massive pay hike from here on. So we could assume that he would surely be one of the big guns of the MCU, and that was proved by what he did in Avengers: Infinity War.

Looking at this tweet, we know for sure that the Director is currently hard at work for the upcoming sequel, so Doctor Strange fans do not have to wait for more than 2020 for this movie to open up. It would be interesting to see whether Marvel would introduce the likes of Eternity in Doctor Strange 2 or they go on the path of Nightmare.

For now, we should focus on the plot of Avengers 4 as Doctor Strange will be returning from the dead and we will see how his grand plan comes to life in the film. Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019, and here’s the official Synopsis:

“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
