Avengers 4 Theory: Loki Will Help Defeat Thanos Even After His Death

Avengers: Infinity War was the biggest and probably the best thriller of this year and for the first time, it really felt that the stakes of the film were really high. Thanos left a trail of death but the first big MCU name he crossed off his list was of the God of Mischief, Loki. Now he will be returning in Avengers 4, but only as a remnant of Time Travel. Or does he have a role beyond that as well?

Avengers 4 Theory Loki Thanos

While we saw Thanos giving a more permanent death to Loki this time, many fans still question the fact that did he even die or was it another one of his illusions. Actor Tom Hiddleston confirmed the fate of Loki and then the fans started to put other questions beyond his death.

Avengers: Infinity War – Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals The Fate of Doctor Strange

While we know that Doctor Strange already has a plan in motion to take down Thanos in Avengers 4, but what if Loki already put one in motion by sacrificing himself. This could further continue a fan theory recently posted by a Redditor named Mybustersword came up with a good explanation telling why Loki sacrificed himself knowing the fact that he would not come out alive. The theory reads:

“I agree that it was a suicide, blatantly obvious that he didn’t have a chance with that tiny knife. I think it was because Loki knew Thanos. He knew Thanos has the rule of balance… He knew that he slaughters half the population when he arrives.

He also knew he was [Thor’s] only (living) sibling, a half one at that, and knew that Thanos would kill one of them…for the sake of balance. So he intentionally sacrificed himself to keep Thor alive. He specifically said to Thanos, I am Loki ODINSON and looked at Thor while saying it, because he was making it clear to Thanos that he was [Thor’s] brother. There would be no confusion or tricks. if he died, Thor could live.

Loki suspected Thanos would have chosen to kill Thor, being the bigger threat and Loki having worked for Thanos in the past. Also, Loki being half sibling and adopted would have won over Thanos’ favor in the end as he has a soft spot for things that are half and for adoption. If you think about it, there was no reason to leave Thor alive. He is very powerful, has been alive for 1500 years Thanos surely is aware of the threat he possesses. Yet he just leaves him there after killing Loki.

Loki calculated the chances of him surviving and actually sacrificed himself so Thor can have a chance to kill Thanos after regrouping”

To take this further, another Reddit user claims that Loki was totally aware of the outcome of his attack upon Thanos, but he did it anyway perhaps because he already had a plan in his head. According to Norse mythology, Loki’s sacrifice will lead him to the heavenly gates of Valhalla from where he could seek the advice from ancient Asgardian warriors. Now with that advice, he may actually be able to assist the ones living in the real world and going up against Thanos.

Loki MCU

Other than this, he is obviously coming back as a result of Time Travel and we have already seen the set photos that confirm that Avengers 4 will take the movie to the events of the first Avengers movie along with other films. We will only find out the rest when Avengers 4 hits the theatres on May 3, 2019.
