This giant CGI battle could take place on the big screen only if we had a spare movie to pit these two omnipotent characters together. Well, we don’t so we will have to imagine the giant battle among the two. This is a question that was raised at the end of Thor: Ragnarok as Surtur was shown to be this huge and powerful being, and now that we have seen what Thanos is capable of, we need an answer to this for sure!
Surtur is a fire demon native to the extradimensional plane of Muspelheim, and is generally portrayed as the Villain of Thor. As we saw in Thor: Ragnarok, he was the one who brings about the end of Asgard (even though Asgard is not a place, but a people). He is a 1000 ft. tall Fire Demon, who grows that huge being powered up by the Eternal Flame.
Surtur’s size allows him the strength and durability that is way more than Thor and even more than the likes Thanos. Being a gigantic mountain-sized fire demon, he has the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force. He is a skilled warrior and swordsman, and his scale of power is usually shown to equal that of Odin in his prime. To our surprise, Surtur actually possesses a great intellect, has the vast knowledge of ancient and arcane wisdom, and his powerful abilities include, levitation and inter-dimensional travel.
Apparently, as we saw in Ragnarok, Surtur has a giant sword which is also known as Sword of Doom. This magical sword is insanely powerful, capable of manipulating vast amounts of mystical energy, and can be used to perform feats such as shattering dimensional barriers and it is made up of a metal known as Scabrite which can only be found in the mines of Surtur’s realm. The Eternal Flame is a big source of power for Surtur, and the power of his Sword reaches an unparalleled level when it meets with the Eternal Flame. The only few weaknesses that Surtur has are that he can be contained or imprisoned by Spells, intense cold and can be taken down by beings wielding cosmic energy powers equaling his own.
Thanos is notably the biggest villain the Avengers have ever had to face. He is the ultimate big bad of the entire Marvel universe and is famous for conquering entire universes in the multiverse. He just becomes unbeatable with the number of powers he has which are the Superhuman strength, durability, endurance, and intelligence, Energy manipulation, Telepathy, Telekinesis, teleportation, and Longevity. Along with this, Thanos gets hold of the Infinity Gauntlet which contains the 6 infinity stones that could wipe out the entire universe with just one blow.
He is known as the Mad Titan by the galactic community and the Dark Lord by his most loyal underlings. He is a very powerful cosmic warlord that rules over a very distant region in outer space. Along with all the powers mentioned above, he commands two massive armies known as the Chitauri and the Outriders. Along with his armies, his loyal generals who are also his children in the MCU are a part of his very evil Black Order. The members of The Black Order include Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, Cull Obsidion and Corvus Glaive.
He is also the father of Nebula and Gamora, and with the use of the Infinity Stones, he can control all of these individuals together and with the powers of this unified team combined, he could take out any being in the entire multiverse.
Thanos vs Surtur
Thanos is one of the biggest villains in the Marvel Universe, but that does not mean that he is the strongest. There are way stronger villains than the mad Titan. One of those is certainly the Fire Demon Surtur. This fight could take place on two plains. The first would be a fair where Surtur does not use the Eternal Flame and Thanos doesn’t use the Infinity Gauntlet and the second one would be using the two sources of power.
The fight without the artifacts would be pretty even and Thanos may have an edge over Surtur. But since Surtur has an internal connection with the Eternal flame, he would grow more powerful using that connection. And once the Flame and the Gauntlet are fully in play, the fight amongst the two is going to reach a level beyond our imagination. Surtur could easily hold his own, but Thanos has the Infinite Stones of power which he could use to beat Surtur in so many different ways possible.
So, ultimately, Thanos is going to be the one to retain the title of the biggest Marvel villain of all time.
