As always, Marvel seldom disappoints. Their latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is infinitely better than anything the world has to offer in terms of the superhero team-up movies. The Avengers face the Mad Titan and his dreaded Black Order in a bid to save the entire Universe from Thanos’ one-man rampage. Mad Titan intends to wipe out half of all life in the universe and he needs all the Six Infinity Stones studded to his Infinity Gauntlet to do that. In the comics, the Infinity Gauntlet has quite a different origin story. The movie version offers a completely different story for how the Gauntlet came into being. And therein lays the problem. The origin story of the MCU Infinity Gauntlet has a plot-hole the size of Texas!!!!
The Mad Titan Thanos knew he had to acquire all the six primordial Infinity Stones to harness the six aspects of the universe in order to make his plan succeed. But there was no way he knew, in all his infinite wisdom, about any technique or device allowing for harnessing the power of all the Six Infinity Stones at once. He knew he had to somehow. But he didn’t know how. His genius mind could not comprehend the physics behind harvesting such gigantic amounts of energy simultaneously.
In addition to that, there was already Infinity Gauntlets present before Thanos wielded his own in his left hand. Thanos’ lack of knowledge about the existence of a device called the Infinity Gauntlet and the presence of so many Infinity Gauntlets in the MCU before Infinity War creates a plot hole like none other.
The Infinity Gauntlet made its first appearance in Thor (2011) where it was shown to be kept secured deep inside Odin’s Vault of cosmic treasures. The Gauntlet appeared next in the mid-credits scene of Age of Ultron in 2015 where Thanos decided to ‘do it himself.’ Does the sudden appearance of the Infinity Gauntlet in Age of Ultron right after it was shown in 2011 in Thor mean that Thanos somehow went past Asgard’s defenses and obtained the Infinity Gauntlet right under Odin’s nose? Is the Age of Ultron version of the Gauntlet even the same as the one shown in Thor? How did Thanos get past Asgardian security? Did Loki help him?
In 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Hela comes to Asgard to take control of the realm after Odin passes away. As Thor and Loki end up in Sakaar, Hela takes a stroll through Odin’s weapon’s vault. In there we see the Infinity Gauntlet still in place. So the one worn by Thanos isn’t the same!! But Hela declares it as a fake. How did she know? She was trapped in Hell by Odin himself. How did she know the Infinity Gauntlet in the Vaults of Asgard was a fake one? She was correct about the Gauntlet. We just don’t know how.
And that brings us to the plot hole we are talking about. When Thor, Rocket, and Groot traveled to Nidavellir so that Thor could get a new weapon forged by the elite Dwarven Smiths, they found the realm already in ruins. Nidavellir is one of the nine realms that Asgard has sworn to protect from harm. Since we know Thanos already had the Gauntlet since 2015, then Nidavellir must have been decimated by the Titan sometime on or before that time period, but not after.
Asgard has destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. So when Eitri asks Thor about why the Asgardians didn’t come to save Nidavellir and Thor replies “Asgard is destroyed”, it doesn’t make sense. Asgard was doing well and good around 2015. So did Thor lie? Or did Asgard just turn a blind eye as one of their own realms was being set ablaze by Thanos? Did Asgard know about the mass execution of the Dwarves of Nidavellir and decided to not give a damn about it? As hard it is to believe, that is the only logical explanation to explain this plot hole. And sadly, this explanation does not sound like Asgard at all.
Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just… do things
