Steve Rogers aka Captain America is perhaps the most patriotic, principled, morally upright and admired superhero in the entire MCU. He is revered by masses who see him as a beacon of hope. He is someone who has inspired an entire generation to fight for their country and humanity. He is a selfless leader who puts his team above his own interest.
In ‘The Avengers’ during the “Battle of New York” with Loki and his Chitauri army, he led the Avengers to victory and it was followed by a threat of extinction from an AI Ultron gone rogue, he stood his ground and put the interests of humanity and team first before himself. But there is one thing that he cares apart from people i.e his Shield made of Vibranium produced by Tony Stark’s father Howard Stark.
Captain America and his Shield have been the trademark for Marvel Studios as Tony Stark and his Iron Man suit or Thor and his hammer. They define the Marvel Cinematic Universe in more ways than one. So when Captain America lost his shield in Captain America: Civil War, everyone saw a piece of their childhood being snatched away from their very eyes.
Russo Brothers told Huffington Post that dropping his shield “is him letting go of that identity. It’s him admitting that the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”
Captain America is a proud lover of the Shield. He has used the Round Frisbee made of Vibranium for both offense and defense. So Infinity War, without a doubt, was going to give Capo his shield back one way or another. Wakanda had the technology to mold the Vibranium into anything they wanted.
So they were the ones who gave Cap his new Shield in Infinity War when Cap came to defend Wakanda from the Outriders army sent by Thanos to snatch the Mind Stone from Vision. But had the artist had its way, the Shield you see Cap holding in Infinity War could have been of an entirely new design? That’s right folks. Presenting Infinity War – Original concept art for Captain America’s Shield’s had a whole new design!!!
King T’Challa and the Wakandan Technological division along with Shuri could be credited for giving Cap that iconic cool looking, tactical black shield in Infinity War. But the prop creators for Infinity War said that the design of the Shield was so peculiar that it was hard to materialize the thing from paper. So they suggested changing the design of the shield.
AL was recently in an interview with Kenneth Spivey, the chief Prop master for Infinity War. Spivey was responsible for making most of the items for Infinity War. Starting from the Stormbreaker to the Black Order Weaponry along with the Infinity Gauntlet worn by Thanos, Spivey got down and dirty and made almost everything you see in the movie including the Iron Man and Black Panther suit of armor. But the Alabama Native claims the hardest to make of all the props was undoubtedly Captain America’ Shield which gave him quite the fix while making it.
While the design itself was hard to replicate in the flesh, it was another thing related to the shield that made it even more difficult to materialize. Spivey says there was a last minute change to the shield by the movie concept artists. He claims that last minute change was the reason for most of his worries.
AL says Spivey claims the original Captain America shield for Infinity war had a whole new design that was completely different from the one you see in the movie. It was rather long and extended well beyond the elbow. It also had claw-like extensions thus cementing it as a creation of Wakanda, the claws being a tribute to the Panther God of the nation. The Shield was also of the color Silver, unlike the black version we see in Infinity War.
While Spivey was secretive while making the shield, he had to consult the Marvel Studios a lot while making the shield who had given him only three months to make the particular prop. And just when he was ready to present the shield, there was a last minute change with the art and Spivey had to make last minute changes.
Here is the picture of the original shield of Captain America for Infinity War:
Spivey claims the Shield had to be remade “pretty much from scratch”. The Shield was now shortened and the claw extensions are taken out. But then after a long day’s work and after Spivey presented the shield to Marvel, the Studio decided to go the CGI route and completely remake the Shield for Cap from scratch using Special effects.
Spivey is not angry though. He has been a long time ally of Disney and he will keep working on their movies. Spivey’s dream is to one day work for Lucasfilm as the Prop Master for the Star Wars franchise. Disney now owns both the Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm. So, Spivey’s dream of working as a Star Wars Prop Master just might become a reality sooner than you could ever realize. Here’s to hoping his dreams come true.
Avengers: Infinity War is already playing in theaters. It is still drawing a big audience and is now officially the highest grossing superhero movie of all times. It breached $1 Billion in Box office sales in merely 8 days which is fastest ever.
