Deadpool 2 Confirms [SPOILER]’s Relationship With Professor Charles Xavier

Deadpool 2 is the latest addition to the summer blockbuster list having amassed a $301 million weekend opening, leaving the universally acclaimed Avengers: Infinity War behind. With its fast-paced storyline, intense action, and irreverent humor, Deadpool has once again proved that the era of R-Rated superhero movies has just begun.

The Deadpool franchise has never really cared much for the universe building which the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been doing since a decade. Instead, the franchise uses its own Merc with a Mouth to drop various easter eggs once in a while, thanks to his breaking of the fourth wall. And it seems, Deadpool 2 just confirmed the relationship of a major X-Men character with the founder of the X-Men and Xavier’s Academy for Gifted Youngsters, Professor Charles Xavier.

Before proceeding further, be warned, this post contains some minor spoilers.

Deadpool 2 has a similar face in the movie that was last seen in X-Men: The Last Stand. Yes, we are talking about the unstoppable Cain Marko aka Juggernaut. But in X-Men: The Last Stand, Juggernaut had a very limited on-screen time and his backgrounds were completely ignored.

Deadpool 2 follows the story of Juggernaut, who is incarcerated in a prison cell. One of the side characters of movie, Firefist decides to free Juggernaut by breaking him out of the prison, so that he can murder an abusive headmaster of a home where Firefist used to live.

As the scene proceeds, Firefist and Juggernaut engage in some conversation which becomes a startling revelation for the movie-goers.

The conversation starts with Juggernaut’s iconic helmet, which protects him from psionic attacks, like the one Magneto wears most of the times. It turns out; Cain Marko wears the iconic helmet to protect himself from Professor Charles Xavier, his stepbrother.

The revelation of Juggernaut being the stepbrother of Professor Charles Xavier might be shocking for normal movie-goers, but it was established way before in the comics. Thankfully, we have the Deadpool franchise which was able to drop in this little information because neither does it care about its timeline, nor does it care about building a proper cinematic universe.

Cain Marko is the son of Kurt Marko, who becomes Charles Xavier’s stepfather when he marries Sharon Xavier after the death of her husband Brian, for which Kurt is partially responsible. Kurt Marko favors Charles and abuses his own son, Cain. Cain resents Charles and bullies him frequently. Cain Marko and his step-brother Charles serve in the US Army and are stationed in Korea. Marko finds a hidden temple dedicated to the entity Cyttorak. On entering, Marko finds and holds a huge ruby and reads the inscription on the stone aloud: “Whosoever touches this gem shall be granted the power of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak! Henceforth, you who read these words, shall become … forevermore … a human juggernaut!” The gem channels Cyttorak’s power into Marko. The transformation causes a cave-in, and the character is buried and presumably killed, not being heard from again until a sudden assault on the X-Men’s headquarters.

Juggernaut is not a born mutant, unlike Professor Charles Xavier or various other mutants in the Marvel Universe. His immense strength comes from the entity Cyttorak, which enables him to gain all his powers. Some of his notable powers are superhuman strength to the point that he can break mountains and use skyscrapers as weapons. His superstrength also comes with extreme durability, making him invulnerable to normal physical attacks.

His extreme durability in the Juggernaut form has taken blows from the God of Thunder Thor himself, and survived. On top of that, he can create a mystical force field around him which grants him even more durability and protection from attacks he cannot perceive. He also possesses superhuman stamina which helps him not to tire even after fighting other powerful beings for a long period of time. In his Juggernaut form, he doesn’t require food, sleep, water or oxygen to survive.

Even though he has so many abilities up his sleeve, the greatest power bestowed upon him is to have a nearly unstoppable momentum. Once he gets in motion, he can create havoc unless stopped by a really powerful force.

Despite his strengths, his greatest weakness is to the psionic attacks. The reason Juggernaut wears a helmet is to protect himself from mental attacks by other telepaths, mostly his stepbrother Professor Charles Xavier. On various occasions, Xavier has tricked him into removing his helmet, making himself vulnerable to his powerful telepathic powers.
