Here’s “The Cable Connection” That Can Link Deadpool Franchise To Future X-Men Movies!

Deadpool is known for his crass sense of humor, mindless violence and general aversion towards rules to which a superhero must adhere to. Thankfully, Ryan Reynolds’ vision of Deadpool has been quite faithful to its comic book adaptation with its irreverent humor, gore and razing downs the fourth wall to the ground.

Despite its fun content, Deadpool has his own share of sentimentality, which was also explored in the second installment of the franchise. The biggest reason that fans were excited about Deadpool’s sequel was that Cable was thrown into the mix. He is among the most beloved anti-heroes in Marvel comics.

The director David Leitsch claimed prior to release that the chemistry between Deadpool and Cable is totally insane and we couldn’t agree more with him. Here’s what he said:

“Cable has a really interesting and complex backstory. Obviously, no film could ever encapsulate the entire backstory, so I think we’ll find the first introduction is about who this character is. When you look at the Cable and Deadpool comic book series, you see how there is banter between them. Whether they are on opposite sides or not, they are definitely formidable to each other. One is frustrating to the other. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin is amazing. It’s not unlike what you see in the Cable and Deadpool series”.

The Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld added:

“Josh is such a great actor, that’s where it starts, and gravitas, and who else really is going to hold their ground with Ryan as Wade/Deadpool. That is energy unbridled, and so you’ve gotta hold your ground. When I see the two of them I’m like “It’s comic book’s equivalent to Rush Hour, and I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it. I think it’s just great.”

In Deadpool 2, the initial big threat appears to be Cable, who has come to the present timeline to kill a certain mutant, so that his wife and daughter can survive in the future. As the movie progresses, Cable reveals that in his future timeline, his wife and daughter are killed. So in order to reverse that, he has travelled back to the past. But with this, Cable drops a massive easter egg which has a deep link with the X-Men storyline.

The tragic backstory of Cable revealed that his daughter is Hope. While this might be an unheard name for casual movie-goers, it’s a massive deal for longtime comic book fans. While the movie- Deadpool 2, smartly didn’t reveal much about Hope, in hopes of giving a proper cinematic entrance to her, we will be revealing some facts about her and how is she going to be an integral part of the X-Men universe.

Hope is not just another character in the X-Men universe. She is the adoptive daughter of Nathan Summers aka Cable, which makes her Hope Summers. Hope Summers is an Omega-level mutant in the X-Men universe, making her one of the strongest beings in the Marvel universe.

Her powers include mimicking the abilities of other mutants when in close proximity and even amplifying the abilities to some extent. Apart from that, she has the ability to kick-start the X-Gene in other mutants. She can also help other mutants to amplify their own powers, as noted by Hellion.

The biggest trump card in her possession is that she is a host to the powerful Phoenix Force, which gives her no upper limit to her abilities. Upon her birth, Cerebro, the device used by Professor Charles Xavier exploded, being unable to Hope’s massive energy signature.

Hope Summers definitely ranks among the most powerful mutants in the Marvel universe. But, it’s not her abilities which make her an important figure. First seen in X-Men: The Messiah Complex storyline, Hope was born after the events of ‘House of M’ and ‘Decimation’.

For the uninitiated, the decimation storyline follows a reality where the mutant gene is reversed to normal gene by Scarlet Witch, leading to a massive decrease in the mutant population. On top of that, the mutant gene stopped appearing altogether, almost driving the mutants into extinction. That’s when Hope was born, the first mutant to be born after the catastrophic events. As her timing was surprising, she was seen as a Messiah by the X-Men, while, Bishop and the Purifiers saw her as the Anti-Christ, who would massacre the humans, leading to a bloody war between mutants and the humans.

As she became a target right from her birth, Cyclops entrusted his son, Cable, to protect the Messiah of the mutant race. In order to protect her, Cable travelled to the future, where he got married to a woman named Hope. But unfortunately, Hope gets killed. In order to hohonoris dead wife, Cable names the mutant child as Hope Summers.

Hope Summers is arguably one of the most interesting characters to be created in recent history. Being related to the famed Summers family tree, even though through adoption, her arcs have been compelling. The biggest mystery of Hope is her actual lineage, as till date, her biological father is yet to be revealed. Her actions have affected quite a many X-Men stories, making her a potential link-up to the future of the X-Men movies.

Since Cable’s first photo was released, he was seen with a teddy bear. It now becomes clear that it belongs to Hope Summers from the future. And the time is ripe to widen the cinematic universe, as Hope is good friends with another young mutant who recently made her debut.

Cable’s Daughter

Yes, you guessed it right. It’s Laura Kinney aka X-23, the all-new vicious Wolverine. Also, the sequel of Deadpool has set up X-Force spin-off in the future. Here’s what writer Paul Wernick has said:

“Calendar-wise, X-Force is next up in line. Drew is finishing up his movie [Bad Times at the El Royale]. Come the fall, I think he’ll turn his attention fulltime to X-Force and so that’s next up in the series. I do think we are always thinking about Deadpool. It will be nice to take a little bit of a break. We’ve been writing consecutive Deadpool drafts for the last nine years. And we’ve got drafts since 2009 in our computer all the way through to 2018. So, it will be nice to kind of catch our breath. My guess is you will see Deadpool again in his own movie. Whether we skip Deadpool 3 and just go to Deadpool 4, I’m not sure. But my guess is you will be seeing much more of Deadpool in the future in various forms and fashions.”

Rhett Reese added:

“I think what we stumbled into was a new tone, and I think we hope to have our own universe that is defined less by characters and timelines and things like that and more by tone. Deadpool 2 and X-Force and future movies all be this new, consistent, sillier tone. More self-aware tone. And edgier and rated-R tone. We want to be establishing the universe but also focusing on each individual movie and not worrying too much about building a larger threat to the world or a larger plot machination.”

Right now, Deadpool 2 is capturing Box office worldwide as it is raking in the moolah. Go and enjoy it if you still haven’t seen it. The official movie synopsis reads:

“After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.”
